I agree! Galadriel is the most impressive female elf....I think Tolkien himself said (in UT) that she was the wisest next to Feanor, so that does make her very impressive indeed!

There was actually a "maybe" in that statement.

Galadriel was the greatest of the Noldor, except Feanor maybe, though she was wiser than he, and her wisdom increased with the long years.

Tolkien wrote him as a wise Elf. However, I'm not so sure he was so wise b/c of the oath of the Silmarils that he took along with his sons. He was pretty hot tempered and got a lot of people in trouble (the Noldor).

I think Feanor had great knowledge of things and his art was just great but I wouldn't call him wise.

in tolkien letters, tolkien himself says that luthien is the "greatest of the eldar". also, tolkiens wifes grave bears luthiens name.

But Galadriel is the most impressive overall, because she posseses other skills besides a can o'whoop ass.
im trying to think of a time that galadriel ever physically "whoops" anyones ass. i agree she was wise among the elves, but she is in no way on the same level as luthien.

I haven't read the Sil or HoME yet so I don't know of any femal characters from those books, but from LotR I think that Eowyn was the most impressive because she killed the which king. Also, when all said that she couldn't go to war because she was a female, she didn't care and went any way (even though she was in disguis she still went).

Galadriel was a student of Melian (Luthien's mother) so she could "whoop ass" if she wanted to. But I agree that Luthien was at a higher level.

I'm confused...doesn't Tolkien say in the Sil or UT that Feanor is the greatest of the Eldar?

. I posted a quote from UT about 6 posts up the page that answers this question. Tolkien does not say that Feanor is the greatest of the Eldar. He says that Feanor is the greatest of the Noldor.

Galadriel is the best... But I can't help thinking that.

As Feanor is no female character we won't compare him to Luthien in here.

True, Feanor is not female. We were just trying to figure out where Tolkien stood as far as female characters. I don't like Feanor. He's not at the bottom of my list, but he's close.

I would have to agree that Galadriel was the best female character, also. Sometimes you would read about female characters like Erendis (Aldarion's wife) and you think she never really stood her ground. And that her own lack of action caused her to be so cold and turn her love away from Aldarion. I couldn't respect a woman like that.

But Galadriel, she came and went and did as she pleased, married or unmarried. She was a powerful female both in mind and spirit. I think that was what drew both Celebrimbor and Celeborn both to fall for her. It was her strength.

My vote goes to Galadriel.

Aldarion was a little boy in a man's body. He never should have married Erendis, knowing that he would either have to give up sailing off to ME and Gil-galad or give up her love for him. What did he expect? That she would pine for him at home waiting for his return ("Oh, where could he be? I'll just sit here and waste my life away pining for my man." - whatever!). And that she should welcome his abandonment like she deserved it? What a twit!

And Erendis should have known better. You're right, they both made mistakes. He loved to sail off on new adventures. She hated the sea. Hello? Anybody home? Either learn to love the sea, or move on. Wow, that's a match made for doom if ever there was one.

Boo-yah Galadriel is awesome! She's the most impressive.
And why are we talking about Feanor? He's not a woman, he doesn't count. Galadriel all the way.

*sigh* Ok. We were discussing Galadriel, bringing in evidence of her greatness, there's this line that says she was the wisest of the Noldor, next to Feanor. Ok? Feanor is not up for a vote, people. *losing temper* Just evidence to justify why Galadriel is the best female character. *sigh*
