In my village, which is in the Quantock hills of Somerset UK, there is an old stone square, which used to be a dog pound. One evening in the 1600/1700ish period, a man, on his way home from the Inn, climbed the bank, evidently to take a short cut, tumbled into the dog pound, and was eaten by the hungry hounds held there until the next hunt - legend tells us that you can still, if you are lucky, hear his wails on dark nights.

Also, there is a ghost of a Spanish gentleman living [pardon the pun] at the pub, he was apparently murdered for his money by two men from Nether Stowey which is the village where Coleridge wrote Kubla Khan, but was interrupted by a traveller from Porlock.

I am. It's just that I'm currently living in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) because my father works there. Nowadays, we're spending the Christmas vacation with our family in Egypt, so that's why I said I was vacationing (is that even a real word?) in Egypt.

Btw, happy new year everyone!
In Spain the tradition is also to receive the presents on the 6th. Our Christmas is on 25th of course, but the 6th is the Epiphany of the Lord, and we celebrate the arrival of the Maggi with presents to the child. So our children (used to) receive their presents the 6th.

Anyway there was also a tradition of giving a present in advance "brought by little Jesus" on the night of the 24th. This tradition is being substitued by Santa Claus lately (american influence...) so it's not only one present, but almost as many as in the 6th.

Here are the pictures as promised:

The beans my uncle planted this year for Christmas, I talked about these a few posts back.

This is called the "ram road": it's the entrance to one of the temples.

Columns in the same temple. This column hall is said to be the largest in the world, containing 134 columns.

One of the columns in the same temple. It has a drawing of a saint on it (I've outlined some of the drawing in red). Now the reason for this drawing is that, during the period of Roman persecution of Christians, copts used pharaonic temples as churches.

Part of a broken statue of the pharaoh Ramses II. They say that this statue was made from a single stone block that weighed 1000 TONS and the amazing thing is that that stone block didn't come from the same city where the statue was placed, it came from another city a few hundereds of kilometers away!

The feet of the same statue.

Sunset on the Nile.
Enjoy!
EDIT: Didn't realise the pics were so large, but I'm NOT resizing them.

Glad you guys enjoyed them!

EDIT: Here's a quick story:
A few decades back, Egypt had a cotton problem, I'm not sure exactly what the problem was but the thing is our president was visiting China and while there, told the Chinese president of the problem. The Chinese president assured him that he will help. How did the Chinese president help? He ordered all the peasants to shorten their clothes by a few centimeters (i.e. to cut a few centimeters of cotton from their clothes) and gave all the cotton that resulted to Egypt. This was enough to solve the problem!
(Maybe this story is really about China, but I told it anyway )

(Hm, this thread seems good.)

Happy Flanders day to all Flemish mooters! (Eärniel and who else?)

How does the Flemish community celebrate?

Thanks!

(Currently, and sadly, I am the only Flemish, or even Belgian mooter)

How does Flanders celebrate? Well, with concerts, parades and fair here and there. But the real partying is, as far as I know, reserved for the 21st, that being the Belgian National Day and a double jubileum as well this year. Belgium will then have been an independant nation for 175 years and a federal state for 25 years! In fact, there have been celebrations for this the whole year around.

Oh, I have one....it's not too exciting.

Here along the panhandle of Florida is some of the whitest sand you will ever see and it is almost as soft as powder.

Legend has it the early explorers, and maybe even some pirates, sold the sand...passing it off as sugar.

Eärniel - I just learned some organ music by Flor Peeters. I believe he was a Belgian composer.

I have a quick story; it's not good enough to be a thread-reviver, but it's too funny not to share:

Apparently, Egypt is the largest viagra consumer in the WORLD!!
No wonder we have a population crisis

O.o

Those are lovely pictures, Beren; I also especially like the saint one (though of course I'm biased ).
