This is a fun thread. Always nice to know how much you're hated
*takes off evil colonialist hat* I know it's a bit late, but Happy Independence Day, America!

or they could have been conscripts. I remember reading that the Brits used to conscript people and if you didn't fight with them, they hung you as a deserter or a traitor. Quote:

Happy fourth of July, everyone ! Actually, it's over, here. But it has been a part of a four day weekend for me, which is very enjoyable .

There was a lot of build up and antagonism on both sides, the British wanting to save face and the Americans not wanting to have their freedoms taken from them. But in the end, it was the British that opened fire on Charleston and burned it to the ground, and attacked Bunker's Hill. John Dickenson actually got another petition through the Continental Congress, begging King George to keep the peace and saying that they were loyal colonists to him. By then, however, George looked upon them as rebels, and decided to treat them as such. Even though they hadn't openly rebelled until after the British attack and declaration that they were already in rebellion, and must be treated as enemies. What actually inflamed the colonies in the fight for independence was Benjamin Franklin's meeting with King George. Franklin wanted to bring peace - as did most of the colonists. But then Franklin was so humiliated in England that he completely did a 180. He even disownded his favorite son William - who was the last Royal Governor of New Jersey. Before Franklin got involved - it was basically mob mentality. Ben Franklins suport for indepence basically brought about the Declaration of Independence. It was a tough battle to get the colonies to agree to break away from England.
Also - Charleston didn't take place until th revolution was well underway in 1780. The first half of the revolution was purely in the north. Britain's goal was to capture Philadelphia and NY - which they did - and attempt to cut the colonies in half and choke off supplies. But then in 1778 America forced them out of NJ and back to NY. I was going to go to the reenactment of the British being forced out of NJ today at Sandy Hook - but I got tied up in other things. Road to Monmouth It wasn't until after 1778 that Britain decided to turn it's attention to the south. This seems to be a good site - although I didn't look at it fully - American Revolution It has timelines and so forth - as well as links to other Revolutionary War websites.
