Yes and I giggled like the immature brat I am at that poor boy for being given a girl-name.

I'd say Luthien is definitely the most impressive female character, for reasons mentioned by many in previous posts.

Ungoliant. She scared Melkor and rose against him, causing him great pain, which is impressive.

What about Morwen, wife of Hurin and mother of Turin?

Or Andreth, the Beorian wise -woman, and Adanel, the Hadorian wise woman?

But I thought there were also men called Haleth. I think it is a name which can be boy or girl.

Yes-Haleth was orignally the name of the man who brought the Haladin to Beleriand, though he was later called 'Haldad' and Haleth was given to his daughter. It was problably a unisex name.

I really liked Eowyn who disguises herself as a Rohan soldier to go into battle. Then she and Merry whoop some Nazgul butt. That part made me change my mind about her in the LotR books. At first I didn't like her because she couldn't take a hint: Aragorn is taken, back off. But I liked her in RotK.

I also liked Galadriel because although she was one of the Noldor that came back over the sea to M-E, she was one of those that protested against and did not partake in the kinslaying. She is a very strong person, very noble, and isn't afraid to let her opinion be known. For that, I was impressed with this character.

Especially since many of the other female characters in the Sil, Unfinshed Tales, LotR, BoLT1&2 are sort of mealy-mouthed. Some of them get lost in the woods, some of them die of grief, their men do as they please and they just sit there and stew in their anger and become bitter (Erendis). Its hard to like these others.

Turin's slaying of Melkor, from the Second Prophecy of Mandos, is now void and shouldn't be taken into account with the 'canon' that we are working with.

Not 'performed'. Even if what you say is valid, than it would be 'will perform', wouldn't it?

And anyway, if we're getting into THAT kind of stuff, let's not forget things like...creating the world, bringing forth the Two Trees, making the stars...

I don't profess to be the Tolkien police, but if they were here, they might say, "Then you're in the wrong thread eh buddy?"

Go start your own thread!

Ungoliant is an interesting candidate for this. Personally, I don't only take strength into account. Ungoliant might have been very powerful, but she was a lousy friend. Galadriel is more of a well rounded person - powerful, and wise, kind, insightful, and a good leader. Back to strength, it was the Phial of Galadriel that turned back Shelob, the last child of Ungoliant.

Well, if you're going with the most impressive character, ungoliant basically takes the cake. She did face down morgoth, after all. That's pretty darn impressive.

Is there anywhere written if Iluvatar was male or female? Or is it just that we all think of a male good?
