Parents went to Zambia for the weekend.

This is the edge of their hotel, on the Zambezi, a few hundred meters from Vic Falls. Dunno who that dude in the pic is though, so don't ask.

here's a thread for saying where you're going, for how long and what it was like (after you've got back, of course, unless you have some sort of spooky power.)
I'm going to Europe with my roommate/friend for a bit over a month this summer (June 2nd - July 8th). I'll fly to London, UK from New York City, spending only 2 nights there... then off to Rome via a flight, we'll tool around Italy and take a ferry to Split, Croatia for the beaches there. Then back to Italy and a train ride to Nice, France (and anything else along the south side of France. Then a train trip to Madrid (where the men are as hot as the summer sun), where we'll stay with a friend of ours for about a week to 10 days. Then a night train to Paris, France... several days exploring that city and any surrounding places. Then onto Amsterdam, Netherlands via train... where we'll explore the various "coffee" shops, as well as visit some old towns nearby. Then another flight to London, UK... where we spend one night and fly back to New York City... and then home.

I hope we will be well received in Europe, despite the Europeans' dislike of Americans (or so it seems). I plan to bring some phrase books and i have a small translator that may help me also. I do not expect anyone to speak English... so, I'm trying to learn all the languages I need to (Spanish, Italian, French... and not sure about what they speak in the Netherlands, yet).

I just hope Bush hasn't completely turned the world against the American citizens. :-/

A pity you don't make a stop between Paris and Amsterdam. In the Netherlands they speak Dutch by the way but it would surprise me big time if most people can't help you in English, or French.

No time to stop by here in Finland?

Sounds like a wonderful trip! I'd like to do that too!

I believe you'll be well recieved. Us Europeans aren't that bad.

Mostly we like Americans. We just don't like Bush.

Almost everyone in Holland speaks English, which is just as well coz Dutch is like Dwarvish: a real jaw-cracker. Paris has changed a lot recently, in that they seem to have stopped pretending not to understand any English at all. However, it's well worth making the effort to learn a few phrases.

Sounds like a fantastic trip; hope you have a great time.

Not exactly a holiday but took the kids to my parents for a break over the weekend. They have a huge garden with woodland etc so the kids love the place. On the Sunday we went to a medieval warfare demonstration at Bolsover Castle. Was good fun, though it did take some imagination to picture the Battle of Crecy re-enacted by 6 combatants!

I like hoplidays, but I don't like being away from friends and having to make email notices on many forums sites....

On that note, sun-star and I will be away for one week. Try to hold back your tears.
