Does anyone know WHY US english is subtly different? Did someone arbitrarily change if after they shafted the English or something? Was there a historic shift in th language?

I have no Idea, Bop. I think it has to do with cultural divergance. I.E. each grew in a different direction once the seperated.

I'm English and therefore use Standard English. I think the American spellings came about just because they evolved differently. For example, we have different words for some things. Using the whole pavement/sidewalk thing is a bad example, but if an American her could define the world "momentarily" that would be good. As it has slightly different meanings in English and American English, and shows different useage of the word. It's useage that defines what it comes to mean.

Bleh...I'm boring everyone. I study English.

Benjamin Franklin changed the spellings after or during the Revolution. They were changed to the way words are actually pronounced and also to seperate America further from England. It was declared - American English. Along with melting down the statues of their kings and using them to create cannon and musket balls to fight the Revolution, we threw out their language and ridiculous spellings .

Colour = color <- the "u" serves no purpose
Theatre= theater <- it isn't pronounced "tray" it's pronounced - "ter" so why have the "r" before the "e"?

I use the following spellings interchangebly "theater" and "theatre"; "grey" and "gray". I generally use "theatre" for live performance play houses - such as on Broadway or McCarter Theater in Princeton and I use "theater" for movie theaters.

As for celcius versus farenheit - farenheit is more accurate than celcius.

There was a mistake done in the development of the metric system - the calculation was based on the degrees of the earth - but they were miscalculated.

Quote:
The metre was supposed to be one tenth-millionth part of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator when measured on a straight line running along the surface of the earth through Paris.

While France was evolving the metric system, England also was setting up a more scientifically accurate determination of the yard. Where the French relied on the assumed constancy of the earth's size as a basis for the permanency of their standards, the British turned to the measured beat of the pendulum. Galileo already had learned the secrets of a pendulum. He found that the length of time it took for a pendulum to complete a swing depended upon the length of the pendulum itself. The longer the pendulum, the slower it swung. He also found that a pendulum a little over 39 inches long would swing through its arc in exactly one second. Since a pendulum always behaves exactly the same way under the same conditions, here was another unchanging distance upon which to base a standard measurement.

In 1824, the English Parliament legalized a new standard yard which had been made in 1760. It was a brass bar containing a gold button near each end. A dot was engraved in each of these two buttons. These two dots were spaced exactly 1 yard apart. The same act that legalized this bar as the standard for England also made the provision that, in the event it was lost or destroyed, it should be replaced using the pendulum method to determine its length. A few years copies of both the English yard and the French metre standards were brought to the United States. The English system of measuring was almost universally adopted in the United States.
I personally don't like the metric system. They miscalculated it anyway when they tried to figure out the distance from the North Pole to the equator.

Ridiculous spelling? It's their langauge to begin with. Why do I have the feeling this is an anti-non-American?

I'm not anti-non-american. But my ridiculous comment was in terms of the -tre's and ou's - which Ben Franklin felt were completely unnecessary and had no meaning to the way the words were pronounced.

Plus I'm still making up for all the past anti-American comments on Entmoot. I only have about 897 more snide remarks toward England and Europe and I think we may finally be even (that is if they can refrain from making any anti-American comments). "They" know who they are.
