Morgoth's hand? Do you mean Beren's hand?

RE: Haun

Ahh sorry, it seems the mists of time has dulled my memmory once again

This is what it says in The Silmarillion:

Quote:
Then Morgoth recalled the doom of Huan, and he chose one from among the whelps of the race of Draugluin; and he fed him with his own hand upon living flesh, and put his power upon him. Swiftly the wolf grew, until he could creep into no den, but lay huge and hungry at the feet of Morgoth. There the fire and anguish of hell entered into him, and he became filled with a devouring spirit, tormented, terrible and strong. Carcharoth, The Red Maw he is named in the tales of those days, and Anfauglir, The Jaws of Thirst. And Morgoth set him to lie unslepping before the doors of Angband, lest Huan come.
Well at least the passage shows why he was so powerful, and able to breach 'The Girdle of Melian'. Whether he was fed Morgoth's very own hand I can't tell, the wording isn't too clear to me.

Thank you Captain. I just didn't understand. The beast did bite off Beren's hand that held the Silmaril, and that's what I was thinking of. Now I see that you meant he was fed by Morgoth's own hand.

Thingol had the Dwarves set the Silmaril in the Nauglamir, the necklace that the dwarves had given Finrod, and Hurin took out of the destruction of Nargothrond and gave to Thingol. Once the Silmaril was set in the Nauglamir and Thingol put it about his neck, the Dwarves rose up against him and killed him and took it. In the end, it is uncertian if Earendil wore the Nauglamir and the other jewels in it about his neck, but the Silmaril was bound to his forhead when he was set in the sky as a star.
