Oh, Laurelyn, I'm sure you could make yourself understood if you really wanted to. There are other ways of communicating . . . If all else failed, you could always draw pictures.

Me: I mean you no harm! *holds up stick figure picture of me and Fellowship clasping hands*
Boromir: What foul scrawlings are these?!
Gandalf: It is the language of Mordor!
Aragorn: She's an Orc in disguise and she means to take us captive!
Frodo: She wants to steal the Ring!
Pippin: She'll starve us until we look like that picture!

I think if the fellowship were to land of my doorstep, the hobbits would be confused, Aragorn, Legolas, and especially Gimli and Boromir would assume I was some sort of dangerous enchantress and then God knows what they would do. So I can only hope that Gandalf is around, because as the wizard he would know a little something about space-time anomalies and be able to convince the rest not to kill me.
Then I could invite them in for tea.
In pantomime...I have no elvish.

I'd say "Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo" then rush inside to find my lists of elven words and phrases...

Then i'd invite them inside, give them food, contact my friends, and try to find someone who can speak quenya to ranslate for me....

sorry, it's a star trek thing..

Another thought, though...

How would they react if they were to arrive at the Tolkien residence in the 60's when he was still alive?

If they turned up outside Tolkiens house he would immediately know them for who they were and start and in-depth discussion in Westron...
Then he'd take the Red Book of Westmarch and show it to them and wait for them to read it...

I wonder what they'd say to Tolkien, and what they'd think of him for writing their story down.
I also wonder what they'd think of the movie! They'd probably wonder why so many things got changed.

It's simple enough... Gandalf and Legolas would be able to understand my thoughts, ala felagund, and so we'd get past the language difficulties pretty easily.

Then I would sit them down and have them teach me Sindarin.

For those of you who would try to speak Quenya it would be a waste of time.

It was never rarely spoken in the third age by any save the Noldor and only during special occassions.

Sindarin was the lingua franca of the Elves. Dunedain used it as a language of lore . So the Elven that "everyone" knows is Sindarin.

If Sindarin was the langauge of Lore then Quenya would have been a SUPER language of lore.

Sort of like knowing Latin ( Sindarin)

And Quenya being ANCIENT Greek or Sanskrit.

Gandalf would know both Quenya and Sindarin

Aragorn would have know Sindarin VERY likely. But Quenya maybe only a smattering.

Boromir was a man of Action not study he may have had a smattering of Sindarin.

Legolas would know sindarin, but probably not quenya do to the politcal situation that rose in the past concering the two languages

Frodo knew sindarin and maybe a smatttering of Quenya

the others i doubt it.

Westron would be your best choice with sindarin a second

Are Westron and English connected?

Hawair and Nariel might recognize it Quenya but probably would not know what was said.

I guess to be safe we just talk in Rohirrim, then. Wasn't it (regrettably I think by JRR.T) similar to Old English?

Rohirric is not similar to old english. Rohirric to those fluent in Westron sounds like old english to those fluent in English.

Westron is therefore your best best-but sindarin is better known "here" so it's the best choice.

Heh...heh...*drools...* Fellowship....at my doorstep....*slaps self* okay, okay, sorry 'bout that. I want to learn Westron....there's Quenya and I think Sindarin courses...anyone know where I can learn Westron? Not like I'd ever get a chance to use it, but...
Actually, if you just offered Merry and Pippin some food (esp. mushrooms!) they'd be on your side instantly...
Me: Uh...hi?
Fellowship: *blinks in confusion*
Me: Um, wait just a sec...*runs inside, grabs mushrooms and other food, runs back. Holds out food.* Wanna come in?
Merry: What's she saying?
Pippin: I'm not sure...but...
Both: she has FOOD! *they both rush indoors*
me: YES!

Lol. This is what I would do

Heres a knock on the door. Opens the door to see the Fellowship. Screams and falls in a dead faint on the floor.
But then I'd have a list handy of the things with which to lure the Fellowship into my house.

Gandalf:Wine, a pipe, soemthing to make him mad or annoyed so he'll have to step over the threshold to turn me into a spotted toad or whatever it is he does(try stealing his hat).
Legolas:Wine, A small avacado sapling, maybe some flat bread.
Gimli:Some of my little sisters golden hair, my Moms jewelry or the rocks off my mantle peice.
Aragorn:My homemade Gondorian standard
Boromir:A shiny trinket(my dads graduation ring)
Merry:Mushrooms, food of ANY sort, maybe the pipe that might not work with Gandalf.
Pippin:Food and drink.
Frodo:A book or food.
Sam:Frodo.
Samwise
ps. Cant say what I'd SAY to them as time is up.

The Fellowship

Very practical Samwise. I would simple bow gracefully, step to the side, hold the door open wide and motion for them to come inside with a smile on my face.

Me: (opens door)"Yes, can help yo...gandalf (said loud) Mithrandir!!!!!
Gandalf:"I know her not,but she seems to know me."
Mebows gracefully, steps to the side, holds the door open wide and motions for them to come inside with a smile on my face.
Gandalf: She seems friendly. and as we are in a strange place we should take what friendship is offered."

What would you do if the fellowship landed in the middle of your living room?
