Jeanette's dossier

Name: Jeanette Holmstead-Garza
Birthday: Sept 22, 1889
Place of Residence: Norfolk, Virginia
Family: Father and mother: Thomas Holmstead and Mary Hobbs
Stepmother: Rose Harding-Holmstead
Stepbrother: Walter Holmstead
Husband: Antonio Garza
Daughter: Regina Garza
Distinguishing features: Only wears black clothes
History:
She was born to Thomas Holmstead and his mistress, Mary Hobbs. Mary died in childbirth so Thomas took Jeanette into the Holmstead household. On Feb 4, 1896, when Jeanette was 6 yrs. old, her father, Thomas, died of smallpox. On March 30 of the same year, Thomas’ wife, Rose, sent Jeanette to a boarding school in Richmond, VA. Jeanette never again returned to England. She grew bitter and resentful at Rose and Walter. Though people addressed her as Jeanette Holmstead she preferred to go by Jeanette Hobbs.
In Aug of 1907, an attorney visited Jeanette. He said that Thomas had set up a trust fund for her when she was born. Now that she was 18, she could withdraw from the $4,000,000 that had accumulated. She quit school the same day and traveled around Europe for the next two years.
Feb 1, 1909, Jeanette was in Spain and stopped to watch a bullfight. She was instantly enamored by the bullfighter and, once he won the fight, she ran down the isle, jumped over the barrier and kissed him in front of the entire arena. His name was Antonio Garza and they were wed a week later on Feb 7, 1909. They lived in Madrid in a hacienda he owned.
On Aug 7, 1910, Regina Lee Garza was born. Yet sadly on June 7, 1915, Antonio was gored by a bull and died. Jeanette then decided to sell everything and move back to Virginia, which they did a month later in Aug of 1915. Jeanette never re-married
There they lived off of Jeanette’s trust fund and what little money Antonio had left them, but in the winter of 1946 they fell on hard times. Together they pulled what money they could but it still was not enough to make all the payments they needed to. They came close to losing their house. It was Regina’s idea to visit Walter Holmstead and ask him for help and since Jeanette could not think of anything else to do, they went together by train to Chicago in Feb of 1947.
On Feb 10, 1947, they visited Walter and asked if he would help them. He denied. However, he offered to put them up in a nice hotel for the week that they were in town. Jeanette was again filled with rage and muttered threats under her breath. She often took long walks by herself and did not come back till late at night. On those walks she would follow Walter, find out about his dealings and what businesses he owned. She frequently went to “The River Queen”. On Feb 15, they took the train back to Virginia.
Once they arrived home again, they began looking for jobs. However on Feb 20, she received the letter summoning her to Walter’s will reading. She was very pleased thinking that perhaps his money would go to her since she was the closest living relative to him.

Robert's dossier

Name: Robert Sears Rauscher
Birthday: Jan 5, 1924
Place of Residence: Hamburg, Germany
Family: Grandparents: George and Victoria Rauscher
Aunt and Uncle-in-law: Amelia and Walter Holmstead
Parents: George and Linda Rauscher
Brother and sister-in-law: Michael and Tara Rauscher
Distinguishing features: Deep German accent
History:
He was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany. His grand father was the one of the leaders in the Gestapo and very involved with the First World War, not in the fighting, but in recruiting spies from other countries. His aunt, Amelia, married Walter Holmstead on Feb 14, 1912, and they lived in England. When the war broke out in 1914, George Sr. persuaded Walter to be a spy.
On July 10, 1917, Amelia Rauscher was poisoned. Walter soon returned home for a couple of months, returned to Germany for four months and then left to America in Jan of 1918. He kept in touch with the Rauscher family often.
In 1937, when Robert was 13 yrs. old, he joined Hitler's youth corps and was trained as a commando. After his training, he took assignments as an assassin and personally oversaw the assassination of many European political and military leaders.
George Rauscher Jr., his father, had infiltrated the FBI as a counter-spy, but on Jan 2, 1942 he was discovered, charged with espionage and executed ten days later. Soon after, Walter contacted the Rauschers and suggested that they come to America and stay in his care. Linda chose to stay with her family and Robert was still at war, but since Mike did not like the politics of the war, he alone took up Walter's offer. There Michael went to school to study materials engineering. Mike soon met Tara Caruso and the two were wed on Aug 7, 1944.
Then in Jan of 1947, Linda confided to Robert that, before his father was killed, he had spoken to her and told her that Walter had turned him in. She told Robert to meet with his brother in Chicago and avenge their father. On Feb 1, Robert went to Chicago, met with Mike and told Mike all that their mother had told him. They plotted to observe Walter and his doings for two weeks. Tara’s family, the Carusos, were one of the most influential Mafia families in Chicago, however Mike dissuaded Robert from using their connections preferring to handle the situation themselves.
Robert stayed in Chicago for 2 weeks. He left for Germany on Feb 14th at 8 p.m. On Feb 28, 1947 he received a letter summoning him to the will reading of Walter Holmstead. He made the preparations to return to Chicago in April.

Brenda's dossier

Name: Brenda Joy Nebref-McMillin
Birthday: Jan 3, 1904
Place of Residence: Brighton, England
Family: Husband: Brian Andrew McMillin

History:
She was born in Newark, New Jersey. When she turned 18 she studied and became a nurse. She enlisted as a volunteer nurse during WWII and helped in many cities in America.
In 1944, stationed in Chicago, Brenda was unneeded in the war effort for a short while, so she began working again and was hired to be a live-in nurse by Walter Holmstead. He contracted malaria while on safari and was having extremely high fevers. She moved into Holmstead Manor in Chicago on March 14. While there she briefly met Amanda Overland, who at that time was 16 and called Walter, "Uncle".
During his delirium, which came on as a result of high fevers, Walter often talked and mumbled about things past. On one occasion, Brenda was shocked and scared when Walter began speaking about being a German spy during World War I and about killing a man named Roger McMillin. She did not understand these things but wrote them down in case she would have to use the information later. Walter had no recollections of his ramblings when the fever left him. Brenda stayed at Holmstead Manor for 4 months, until Walter's high fevers finally left and Brenda was dismissed from Walter's care. She was promptly shipped to England on July 27th to again help with the war.
In confusion and turmoil, Brenda confided in her friend, LeAnn Turner, a fellow nurse. The information of Walter being a German spy would be something the authorities ought to know about, Brenda thought, but she didn't want to turn him in. LeAnn knew Brian McMillin, a doctor who was stationed close by, and because Roger's last name had jogged her memory of him, she introduced them. Brenda told Brian her story of Walter and of Roger. Brian asked the name of the man who confessed this. Brenda said his name was Walter Holmstead, a name that Brian had heard in stories from his father. Brian told Brenda that Roger McMillin was his uncle and that he knew of his death in 1917, but also he was told it was merely a result of an accident caused by his troop being gassed in Germany during WWI. Roger had survived with minimal health and was sent home. He died three months later, his body was found floating on the Thames River. Brian calmed her fears, telling her that she needn't turn Walter in and that he would handle it.
Brian and Brenda were both stationed in a medical facility in London and worked together in the coming months They soon fell in love and were married on Aug 5, 1946 in Brighton, England where they both still live.
In Jan of 1947, Brian got an idea to blackmail Walter because of what he did. They sent Walter a telegram and went to meet with him on Feb 13th. When she saw him again she thought he had aged 50 years in the three years that had gone by. They said they knew what he had done. He did not seem surprised but denied it all. They also said they had incriminating evidence that he was part of the Communist party and that in order for them to stay quiet he would have to pay them a large sum of money. He told them he needed to think about it and would meet with them at his nightclub “The River Queen” the next evening. At that meeting he refused their offer, calling their bluff. They left the next morning back to England.
When Brenda received a letter on Feb 24, 1947 notifying her of Walter’s will reading, she promptly called a travel agent to make arrangements.

Tara's dossier

Name: Tara Ann Caruso-Rauscher
Birthday: Sept 2, 1924
Place of Residence: Chicago, Ill
Family: Parents: Frank and Jan Caruso
Stepfather: Steve Thonpson
Distinguishing features: Mole on the left side of her upper lip.
History:
She was born into one of the most influential Mafia families in Chicago. When she was 5 yrs old, her father went to Detroit to pick up a "shipment", as he called it, which was actually bootlegged liquor. He was killed on Feb 14, 1929 in the St. Valentine's Day massacre. However Frank had made good friends with Steve Thompson, the Caruso's attorney, and made Steve promise that if anything happened to him, Steve would look after his wife and daughter. So on Nov. 20, 1929, Steve Thompson wed Jan Caruso. Tara however kept her father's name.
Walter Holmstead was someone that Tara saw occasionally coming for dinner, often discussing things quietly with the men in her family. Walter had known Steve from the First World War. When, in 1924, Frank said he needed an attorney, Walter brought Steve from England and introduced him to the Carusos.
Nov 7, 1942, at a party Steve threw for Jan's birthday, Tara met Michael Rauscher. He explained to her that he was there with Walter and that his father had recently died, though he did not say how. Also, she was told that he had just moved from Germany and had started going to school nearby. Over the next couple of years they gradually saw more and more of each other and on Aug 7, 1944, they were married with their families’ full consent.
On Feb 1, 1947, Michael's brother, Robert, came for the first time to America to visit. Upon arriving, he hurriedly asked to speak with Michael alone. Tara left but overheard raised and angry voices. Robert stayed in a nearby hotel for the next two weeks. Michael later divulged to Tara what they had discussed.
His father had been a counter-spy during WWII and had infiltrated the FBI. Yet in 1942, he was discovered, charged with espionage and executed. Soon after, Walter contacted the Rauschers and suggested that they come to America and stay in his care. Linda chose to stay with her family and Robert was enlisted, but since Mike did not like the politics of the war, he alone took up Walter's offer. Then in Jan of 1947, Linda finally told Robert that before his father was killed, he had spoken to her and confided in her that Walter had turned him in. So Robert was sent to meet with his brother in Chicago to avenge their father’s death.
Tara saw Walter with suspicion from that time on and when she received the letter summoning her to Walter's will reading, she was not surprised.

Sarah's dossier

Name: Sarah Elizabeth Ann Gove
Birthday: May 27, 1927
Place of Residence: Chicago, Illinois
Family: Parents: Paul and Sharon Gove
Distinguishing features: Always wears flowers in her hair
History:
She was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa on a farm. Paul grew and sold corn, wheat and grain, but only as a front for his more lucrative business of distilling corn whiskey, commonly known as moonshine.
In 1919, with the start of prohibition, the police was closely scrutinizing Paul’s business so Paul looked for a new place to sell his wares. He contacted Walter Holmstead in Chicago, Illinois, whom he knew through a mutual acquaintance. Walter agreed to sell his alcohol for a fee.
In 1929, Paul met Dana Johansen. Dana brought guns from Cuba up the Mississippi and Paul sent them, with his whiskey, to the mob in Chicago, both connections Walter set up. Sarah and Rebecka, their daughters, soon met and became good friends, writing each other often.
During one of these deliveries, pirates boarded, Rebecka’s brother, Benjamin Johansen’s paddleboat, The River Queen. Benjamin died in the ensuing battle. The boat was burned down.
Even after the end of Prohibition on Dec 5, 1933, Paul continued to send liquor to the Caruso family in Chicago as well as again selling booze in Iowa.
In 1945, Sarah and Rebecka ran away from home. Jointly they stole $500,000 from their families. They wanted to open an establishment but did not know how or where. Sarah came up with the idea to go to Walter to get help. Rebecka agreed.
Walter did indeed help and the three of them together opened a nightclub, with a bar and a casino, along the Lake Michigan shore. They called it "The River Queen", which Rebecka named after her brother's boat. Walter was a silent partner and put the whole place under the girls' name, he wanted no affiliation with it but he took half the profits. He also used it to launder the money he was making for the Carusos, the Mafia family that he worked with in Chicago, but he left the managing of the club to the girls.
After a couple of years, The River Queen boomed with business. It was making $450,000 a week. Walter rarely came in anymore and only expected a check in the mail every month. By now, Rebecka and Sarah both know how to run the entire club alone, including taking in “deposits” and making “withdrawals”. They got to know and became friends with all the Caruso figureheads that came in to make “deposits”. On Feb 13, they received a call from Walter stating that he would be stopping by the following day around 6 p.m.. Sarah claims to have not seen him at all on the 14th. On Feb 16, she received a letter calling her to Walter’s will reading. She knew that now with Walter’s death, the entire club and all the profits were hers and Rebecka’s.
