Thanks, everyone! It was a very good trip, and I'm glad I went! Lots of memories and things to think on. (I'm still mad I didn't toss that Tengwar stone into the Andes, though! )

My turn...
Looks like we'll be on vacation the first week of August - including bookend weekends. At first we were planning to go west - it was between Colorado (my preference) and South Dakota (my wife's)... well, the latter won out, of course. I was looking forward to it anyway though - and thought we could drive somewhat leisurely 2 days each way (we now have a portable dvd/game player for the kids), spend one day at Mount Rushmore (patriotic), one at Deadwood (Old West), one at Hot Springs (dinosaurs) and one at Custer Nat'l Park (nature) - with a 'day off' somewhere in there to just hang out. Because of some things that came up early this summer, we put a hold on making plans until some things had sorted themselves out a bit. So - a week or two ago we're trying to line up a place to stay, and there is NOTHING!! Same with Colorado! (apparently there's a big biker thing in SD the week after - and maybe some people are coming early) So - we've been scrambling to make alternate plans... what we finally settled on (and found) is the DC area! Of course - there's something big there TOO! - a once-every-four-years Boy Scout Jamboree (did you hear about those Scout leaders getting electrocuted there? Eeeek! ). We still managed to find something though - at a small town between Baltimore and Washington. Hoping to visit Mount Vernon and maybe Monticello - possibly swing through Shenandoah on the way back home. Would like to take one day out to the coast (beware Merc - I think that calls for Delaware! ). Big entourage... in addition to wife & three boys, we're bringing my wife's mom & sister - and a friend of her mom might come out to join us.

..you're going from Il. to SD, etc. and back to DE and VA? Gadz Zooks, that's a lot of driving. FYI the motorcycle rally is in SD, see http://www.sturgis-rally.com/

Sounds great, Val! FYI, my 15-yr-old son's opinion is that Mt. Vernon was very boring, and Monticello was interesting (their 8th grade class went on a DC trip).

What was the "small town" you plan on staying in? Thats right in my back yard. Before you go to Mt. Vernon stop off in old town Alexandria. Youll enjoy that as well. And look for old Insidious at either the Fish Market or Bilbo Baggins (of course...)

Out west "Baggins" is a sandwich shoppe which specializes in terrific, huge, tasty sandwiches and I was wondering whether that was what you mentioned in Alexandria.

Have a great trip, Val. For some reason I've got a mental image of you all crammed into an RV. Would that be right or are you getting there in convoy, plane, motorcycle gang or camel train?

I'm back!
I *just* love Corsica! Love the mountains, love the starry skies, love the cheeky frogs, love the opportunist stray cats Although I will personally make someone's life utterly miserable if I ever find out who poisoned the beautiful stray cat we named Pirate last year, love the maquis and the granite. Saw whales on the boat back! Wheee! Enjoy your holiday, Oh High King of Annuminas!

Next Saturday, August 6th, I will be going to Lake Shasta on a houseboat. I will stay there for a week, but after that, I am probably going to go somewhere else, leaving an indefinite time where I won't post.

Sounds like a great vacation, Earniel - and I look forward to seeing more Tengwar rocks
Enjoy your trip to Lake Shasta, TB - it should be really beautiful, now that we finally had some rain. I hear it's full again - it was really down quite low before.

In Shasta!? You see? I knew that the two bears that came on the boat last time I went were'nt real bears! They're Upsilon Andromedans spying on Earth! I told Dr. Zaius that I sould have invaded the planet.
Dr. Zaius: I had nothing to do with it. I'm simian, and you're Martian, so I have no clue why you would ask me. Good! The last trip, which I go on, they said the lake was really low. I'm gald it will be full, but hopefully not full enough to get rid of that little sandbar where I plan to set up the telescope for a few nights.

Hey, I got Photo Bucket working!
Here's some Ecuador pics - Doesn't do them justice, but here's a pic in the Andes: in the Andes and here's our whole group - my family is the 5 on the left side, and I'm in the bluish/purple shirt with my hands on my daughter's shoulders: all 16 of us And this one turned out kinda cool (accidentally) - the foreground black, and all you can see are the clouds and the sky - we're at about 14,000 feet here, in among the clouds... top of the world

THere's a few more in the album now... I'm waiting to get pics from the other family members, esp. since our camera battery gave out during the most breathtaking part of the Andes
