There were certainly two Dragons to come that JRRT wouldn't have wanted to eliminate: Beowulf's Bane and Sigurd's dragon. He regarded them most highly. But, as for Balrogs, since there were only seven, and we know for certain of the death of three: Gothmog, Durin's Bane, and the one Glorfindel killed. What are the odds that the other four suvived the Host of the Valar?

I'd say the odds were as good as 50/50. If one Balrog could haul his butt all the way to the Misty Mts. during the tumults of the War of Wrath why not another one making it even further east or south? They obviously had great power and since one made it out that means that others could have too. One obviously has made it out as anyone can attest who knows my mother-in-law.
