Just started reading these fantastic books last week. I'm on the Amber Spyglass now. I think I'd either like my dæmon to be some kind of bird (raven, falcon, etc), rodent (ferret, etc), or a big cat. For practicalities sake, I'd go with a bird.

I'm glad you're enjoying those books. I read them too, and loved them. The only person I've recommended them too said no right off the bat though . I think he judged negative on the books because I recommended them .

So, BeardofPants, what did you think of Lyra's parents?

I don't know what my Dæmon would be. If it were a lion though, I'd be weirded out . Mine would probably be something that focuses intently on one subject, does what it intends successfully on that subject, but while thus focused it misses everything going on around it.

or a wolf (like Nighteyes for any of you who have read the Farseer Trilogy)

I'll let you know after I've finished the last book. So far, I don't quite understand how they haven't villain-ised Lord Asriel for his part in Roger's death. And Mrs. Coulter is quite simply the most horrid villainess I've read about in a long time. But... early days. Still got about half the book left for them to redeem themselves.

Lord Asriel is one of those who thinks his own actions don't matter so long as the greater good is achieved. One of the mindsets that spawns a lot of evil, actually. Both he and his wife are visionaries and each of them is strong and capable.

I think that Dæmons in these books actually are as strong as the individual with whom they are bonded. My primary example of that is that no matter what Lyra's Dæmon changes into, Mrs. Coulter's could always defeat it, regardless of what shape it had taken.

LONG LIVE THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE WEE SCARVIES!

you'll have to excuse me, i'm not at my best
i've been gone for a month
i've been drunk since i left
there so-called vacations
will soon be my death
i'm so sick from teh drink
i need home for a rest
we arrived in december and london was cold
so we stayed in thebars
along charing cross road
we never saw nothin' but brass taps and oak
kept a shine on the bar
with the sleeves of our coats
-chorus-
euston station the train journey north
in the buffet car we lurched back and forth
past odd crooked dykes
through yorkshire's green fields
we were flung into dance
as the train jigged and reeled
you'll have to excuse me, i'm not at my best
i've been gone for a month
i've been drunk since i left
there so-called vacations
will soon be my death
i'm so sick from teh drink
i need home for a rest
take me home....
by the light of the moon she'd drift through the streets
a rare old perfume so seductive and sweet
she'd tease us and flirt as the pubs all closed down
then walk us on home and deny us a round
-chorus-
the gas heater's empty, it's damp as a tomb
and the spirits we drank are not ghosts in the room
i'm knackered again, come on sleep take me soon
and don't lift up my head
'till the the twelve bells at noon
you'll have to excuse me, i'm not at my best
i've been gone for a month
i've been drunk since i left
there so-called vacations
will soon be my death
i'm so sick from teh drink
i need home for a rest
take me home....

I wonder, are we choosing theses because of what we think the'r characters are/what they represent/ or asthetics?

Maybe a bit o' both. Perhaps you choose them because you like what they symbolise- and that is how you perceive yourself(subconsciously or not) ?

Me- some sort of predator, I think. Though, this is not how I think of myself. Maybe this subconsciously what I want to be like?

Hum. I don't know, mine would probobly be a Hawk or a bird of pray. because I don't really talk two people much, and I just kind of walk around and observe everything around me. I don't know, I think you can't sum up a person with one Animal

My dæmon is a very psychotic magpie.

Yes, you are too psychotic!

He doesn't think that's fair of me to call him that. What he doesn't seem to realise is that it means I'm just as insane, so it's not really an insult...is it?

And yes, you are a very psychotic magpie, Lu!
He still begs to differ, and thinks I am not only being derogatory to him but to myself and I should stop. Well hmph.
