Back to what was discussed on the last page, I think we've got a pretty good list of what makes a character impressive (I don't know if we already have one) :

- Their race, which determines their appearance (*cough* Lalia the fat *cough*) and how much power they have
- How they use this power
- What prompts them to use this power
-How much of a risk to themselves is involved in carrying out(good) deeds
-And lastly - their name and title
e.g. Melian the Maia versus Lalia the Fat (Sorry, can't get over that)
Did I leave too much out?

That's a good list, but who is Lalia the Fat? That doesn't sound like a Tolkien character. [looks suspicious]

I think we should also add: How they interact with people.
and
Their actions.

I agree... but, you can have extremes. For example, on the far end of "How they use this power" and "What prompts them to use this power" we have Sauron. A Maia who had great power and was prompted to use the power to bring everyone under his cruel rule (oh, a rhyme!) for his own pleasure. So, be more specific.
If the character uses the power for the benefit of others (not self) and is prompted by the sufferings of others (not self) for whom he/she has no kinship or bond... then I say: that is highly impressive.
But then shall we set limits to only those who have special powers? What of those who have no special powers? Do they not risk greater injury by putting themselves in harms way for others?
What is the greater deed? To have power and use it for others? Or to have no special powers to save yourself, but to place yourself in harms way to take the harms of others you do not know nor have any bond to?

Read the letters of JRR Tolkien. He talks a lot about the customs of hobbits, and relates a story concerning Lalia the Fat.
I was only joking when I mentioned Lalia. I still vote Ungoliant the most impressive.

Then you feel that this thread should not be limited to the characters who do good, but also those that do evil. Alright, have you stated your case for Ungoliant? I was browsing the other posts and couldn't find it.

Yes, I read the "true" storie of Amarië. But in Tolkien it doesn't say anything of the sort, and- *shuts up for her own good*

*cough* Yes, I think good characters are more impressive than evil characters. At least to us.

=.6
But he doesn't say she wasn't evil either... so, she could have been.

But would an evil Amarië allow Finrod to slip from her grasp into the East?

No, Amarië would have made another spell to have Finrod stay with her and abandon his kin for her, staying in Valinor (so she could get her nails and hair done at her convenience), and making him her thrall. However, she was caught (by Galadriel) before she could do this and judged guilty, and remanded into the custody of Námo. Finrod left with his kin, but the spell remained. Rúnyel followed him with estel in her heart that someday he would be released. But he was not. For no one could undo the spell but Morgoth, and he had no reason to do so.

I see. And why wasn't any of that in the Sil or HoME?

The documents were found well after JRRT's death and CT wasn't sure of the authenticity, so he didn't want to take a risk of publishing it. Perhaps, he'll change his mind later.

You're extremely lucky then that Amarië couldn't come to Middle earth. She would *checks dictionary* bring an action for defamation of character.

You can tell Amarië for me, if you can communicate with her: "Bring it on! I will stomp her body into the dust!" *draws sword* "She shall taste my hard, cold blade if she were to step one foul foot upon the shores of Middle Earth! I curse her name thrice, and call all to witness that she is mine enemy for her fell deeds upon Finrod!"

roflol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I just love it when that happens.)
*puts sword away* Eärniel has nothing to fear from me. I would not harm you but bade you take my message to the evil one, Amarië, who's very existence is a shame and a mockery to our kind. (May she rot in Mandos for all eternity!)

Hmmm... I could argue and face Ruinel and her sword... or I could stay safe, but not argue.

Well, duh! Of course I'm arguing!

But CT didn't believe that ME existed, so why would he doubt the authenticity? There are much stranger things in LotR.

Not you. The only thing that saves CT from a thorough *ss whoopin' is that he is kin to the almighty JRRT! Otherwise, I would have to seek him to the ends of Arda and open up an Elven can of whoop *ss on him.
