Back to what was discussed on the last page, I think we've got a pretty good list of what makes a character impressive (I don't know if we already have one) :
- Their race, which determines their appearance (*cough* Lalia the fat *cough*) and how much power they have - How they use this power - What prompts them to use this power -How much of a risk to themselves is involved in carrying out(good) deeds -And lastly - their name and title e.g. Melian the Maia versus Lalia the Fat (Sorry, can't get over that) Did I leave too much out? |

That's a good list, but who is Lalia the Fat? That doesn't sound like a Tolkien character. [looks suspicious]
I think we should also add: How they interact with people. and Their actions.

I agree... but, you can have extremes. For example, on the far end of "How they use this power" and "What prompts them to use this power" we have Sauron. A Maia who had great power and was prompted to use the power to bring everyone under his cruel rule (oh, a rhyme!) for his own pleasure. So, be more specific.
If the character uses the power for the benefit of others (not self) and is prompted by the sufferings of others (not self) for whom he/she has no kinship or bond... then I say: that is highly impressive. But then shall we set limits to only those who have special powers? What of those who have no special powers? Do they not risk greater injury by putting themselves in harms way for others? What is the greater deed? To have power and use it for others? Or to have no special powers to save yourself, but to place yourself in harms way to take the harms of others you do not know nor have any bond to? |

I was only joking when I mentioned Lalia. I still vote Ungoliant the most impressive.

Yes, I read the "true" storie of Amarië. But in Tolkien it doesn't say anything of the sort, and- *shuts up for her own good*
*cough* Yes, I think good characters are more impressive than evil characters. At least to us.

But he doesn't say she wasn't evil either... so, she could have been. |

But would an evil Amarië allow Finrod to slip from her grasp into the East?

*puts sword away* Eärniel has nothing to fear from me. I would not harm you but bade you take my message to the evil one, Amarië, who's very existence is a shame and a mockery to our kind. (May she rot in Mandos for all eternity!) |

Hmmm... I could argue and face Ruinel and her sword... or I could stay safe, but not argue.
Well, duh! Of course I'm arguing! But CT didn't believe that ME existed, so why would he doubt the authenticity? There are much stranger things in LotR.
