OMI!!! Stop the compliments!!! I just got my brains back in my head!!! And all in the right places, too (it was like a big puzzle). Ack!

Actually, your posts are great to read because you are so open minded and willing to look at all angles.

Has anybody mentioned Lalia the Fat? She ruled the Took clan for 22 years after her husband died. Not a small feat I would imagine. Although it was rumoured Pippin's sister had a part in her death...

Oh, 'tis a shame. My head hadn't swollen by that much, yet.

But Yavanna made the Two Trees of Valinor! The light from which three jewels were made, which were essentially the topic of an entire book.

I think names are a part of a character's 'impressiveness' also. Somehow, the name Lalia the Fat doesn't seem to make one immediately think 'Wow! She must be extremely powerful!'

Probably not addressed to me, is it?

"your" as in the plural "your". It includes you as well.

"Lalia the Fat?" *roflol* ... no, that name does not conjure up images of greatness.

Yes, true, but they were destroyed by Ungoliant and Melkor. The stars continued to shine through the night, despite all of Melkor's evil deeds, which gave hope to all who looked upon them in the dark.

Sigh of relief. Was very embarassed there.

What? Of course it does! Can't you just picture: this short, fat hobbit, chubby arms outstretched, golden light in the background, her beautiful curls being gently blown by a breeze.

But the stars weren't directed targeted with spears, were they?
PS: Ungoliant wasn't a Valar, was she? I think A Complete Guide to Middle Earth said as much.

I like the names of all the Valier. I was going to choose Vaire as my username, but she's the doom-goddess. So I settled for a lake instead.

She is one of the Valar. The spouse of Mandos. She weaves the tapestries that cover the walls of the halls of Mandos and tells the story of all things within time.

That's also why I wanted to use her name. I link things everywhere, and she is a weaver. Get it, links and weaver?

Wow! I actually knew something a Tolkien expert didn't know! *feels her head swell once more*

Nice image, though it'd have to be from a hobbit-wheelchair.

Yep, Pearl got her pearls!

short, fat hobbit... me thinks this describes many Hobbits.

I didn't say Ungoliant was a Valar... check me on this, but I think she was a Maia corrupted by Melkor.

There's not all that much that Vaire does in The Sil, is there. Just says what she does (weaver of stories, etc.). But I wouldn't have rejected the name because she was Namo's wife.

I always thought Ungoliant was a non-category creature.
