Shriek!!!! Really?! Aragorn and Eowyn. no,no,no,no ... fortunately he didn't ... What would have been with Arwen and Faramir ... and how could that fit into the story?

Arwen wouldn't have been in the story at all; she was only added to lighten up Aragorn's character.

Faramir would have been the same, except have less of a role in RotK, but maybe he would have been friends with Eowyn while they were injured in the Houses of Healing.

God, I have to stomach this first. Now I'm really shocked. But okay, if there was now Arwen, it wouldn't be that unrealistic. I thought Arwen was there and he chose between Arwen and Eowyn. But if there was no Arwen .... but still shocking.

Whoa, I'm gone for a week in the wilds and I come back to read posts like "Arwen and Faramir" (yuk) and "Eowyn and Aragorn" *yak*. What is this thread coming to?!!

I believe we were discussing how Galadriel was the most impressive female character! So, lets get back on the subject, please.

Daydreaming? I guess not everybody in here thinks she is the most impressive female character. Although really great.

Deep down, you just know Galadriel is the most impressive. You just know it.

But I'm saying that it takes more than physical strength and battle hardness to be impressive. Galadriel doesn't take any crap from anyone. But she doesn't open a physical can of "whoop ass" on anyone to get what she wants. Whereas, Eowyn had to disguise herself as a man to go into battle with the Rohirim, because she was told to stay home with the other women. Galadriel does as she pleases when she pleases and no man tells her what to do, not even Celeborn. No comparison here.

Btw, Galadriel did fight in the Kinslaying against the Noldor defending her mother's kin.
Further, Galadriel uses her power wisely, to protect her people. She is very insightful, and can relate to anyone, regardless of rank, race, etc. She is perceptive, intelligent, and far-seeing. She fights only when absolutely necessary. She is instrumental in the destruction of the One Ring, through her carefully chosen gifts (Phial of Galadriel), supplies, and advice. She does this freely, knowing that it signifies the fading of Lothlorien. Galadriel is so impressive that spending 30 days in Lothlorien had such an effect on Gimli and Legolas that the social barriers of bad history and racism were deconstructed, and they became best friends, loyal until death.

That is why Galadriel is the most impressive.

The Gimli and Legolas bit is a tad pushing it. While I'm sure Galadriel had a part in it, I doubt that it was solely because of her.

I have to agree with this. I think Gimli and Legolas' friendship developed as they went along. Afterall, they were companions in a deadly quest and lived and fought together. In spite of the strife that existed between them being elf and dwarf, they ended up fighting for the same cause, and protecting their companions, and each other.

I agree... I do not think Galadriel had an influence on the friendship of Gimli and Legolas. Their friendship came from getting to know one another better, and not just seeing each other as Naug and Elf.

I misphrased that. What I really meant is that Galadriel facilitated their friendship, not created it, as I seem to have implied.

Happily, I notice no one disagrees with the rest of my post (aka the 'correct' part) .

Maybe.

As our discussions all were about Galadriel, Luthien or Eowyn, I suggest that we open a poll about that.

Legolas and Gimli did seem to be closer after that visit. So, perhaps the atmosphere washed away any prejudices either had against each other. I can not recall conversations between them prior to that visit. I will have to reread the book.

IMO, Galadriel helped Gimli a lot to get rid of his prejudices. I mean, after he has meet her, he defended her like no one else did. In think through her he saw the elves in a new, better way.
And that again, caused Legolas' new connection to the dwarves and especially to Gimli. He realized that the dwarves are not that dumb as he might have thought earlier.
