I'm not going to quote all the different passages from LOTR - but according to Tolkien's descriptions the Ringwraiths were a lot more like the animated version (in movement and looks).

It's closer to the book - but the animation and and it's mixture with live action sucks. It gets even worse after Boromir dies and it moves onto The Two Towers.

It does say in the book that 'without their steeds they are crippled' and the ones in the animated version (esp. the one in the woody end) looked pretty crippled to me. I did like the gothic look of the ringwraiths in PJs version, especially when they all move together as it looks like they're being controlled by one mind (Sauron?) but the hesitant stabbing of Frodo is truly comic!

I think there are some direct similarities between the animated version and PJ's live action movie that were not included in Tolkien's work.

For instance, the scene of the hobbits first encounter with the ringwraith by the tree is the same in both movies, but is certainly not the way it occurs in the book!

In the book, Frodo is separated from the rest of the group on the other side of the road when the Nazgul arrives. No one else sees his temptation to put on the ring.

In both movies, however, all four hobbits are grouped together in the same order under a large tree root. The scenes and camera angles are strikinly similar. Coincidence???

Actually I'd envisaged them all together, must not have read it properly. I thought they hid inside a hollow tree though, not under an abnormally large tree root.
