A question of technology!

I would like to know what makes a DVD-player into a DVD-"burner". Which component is it that actually does the "burning"?

In Sweden the DVD-RW player cost about $1500 and even if I will wait until the price has gone down to $500 it would be interesting to know makes it tick.

Wouldn't "burning" DVD's be illegal?

DVD burning is just like CD burning, but it allows you to have 4.7 Gigabytes (i think) of space as compared to 700 Megabyte CDR. Yes, it would be illegal to copy a copywrited DVD, but you can use them for alot of other things aswell.

Yes, but we all know what we would do with one. Music is copywrited but that doesn't stop us.

For a real deal, buy the new high end iMac. It is a has a DVD burner and is a computer to boot!

I have absolutely no idea!

How should I know? Like I said - I have absolutely no idea!

Methinks an additional laser would be introduced to "write" into the miniscule grooves on the disc, one probably of similar size or maybe bigger, than the "reading" laser.

This is very interesting. Now I want to know too!! Get Wayfarer - he knows everything!

to burn a cd, you need a SPECIAL LASER.
thats why its called Burning, cos it is, literaly BURNT. the information is Burnt onto Cds, or in this case Dvds by a laser.

All normal drives also have laser, to READ the information, but are not capable of Burning.

my point is, that you cant 'upgrade' ur dvd drive, to a Dvd-Rw drive, its impossible to by individual bits/peices for customisation of a cd drive.

You will have to buy a Dvd-Rw drive thats already built.

Also, burning Dvds wont be illegal, as they are designed for people to burn 'home movies' and 'backup harddrives'.
i certainly wont be using it for anything other than those 2 facilites *cough, *ahem.

It's entirely possible, by means of compression and a video Codec called DivX4 to copy a DVD movie onto a standard CD-R.

Except then you lose the special features, subtitles, extra languages, DTS and Dolby Digital channels (I think...).

You won't be able to change between pan-and-scan and widescreen, or letterbox, or panaramic view...

And the quality will be worse (compression)...

Yes, the DivX codec also has applications in the broadcast industry. The high compression ratio allows for less bandwidth being sent across the network from the head-end servers to the PC's set-top boxes, TV-sets.

There is also a new technology on DVDs that's a little bit hush-hush regarding implementation but has been announced in the news lately. It's called Blu-ray. Basically, it involves using lasers with blue range wavelengths/frequencies to be able to read data in smaller pits on discs. This means more pits and, hence, more data per disc. Potentially, a blue-ray disc could handle up to 27 GB.

Here's just one of many news items on the subject.

Thanks for all the info. Now maybe I'll wait for the blue-laser DVD-RW player to come along (and buy it in another 20 years)

But first of all I'll buy the DVD-RW player on the market now (when the price has gone down).

My next TV-purchase will be a plasma backprojection tv (costs $13 000 now)
