So, how did the Elves exactly ride without a bridle?

I fail to understand why on earth the Elves were riding around without even using a bridle.
Sure, I can see they rode bare-back and all, but riding without a bridle must've looked kinda hilarious.
I mean, where exactly do they put their hands?
Do they just sit upright, or do they hold their hands round the neck of the horse, or do they just lean forward?

Prob. lean down and put them on either side of the horses's neck or withers when they're moving fast, and just do whatever they want with them when they're just walking.
