I can testify from personal experience *ahem* that "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" has been around since the late 1960's. That counts as a fund-raiser and I think the UN was better accounted back then (literally by accountants), but I was such an innocent child - how would I know?

Hey, those were real silver dimes, boy! Just get a few milk cartons full and wait for the hike in silver value after the dropping of the Gold standard and Silver standard and let inflation do the rest!

And the candy was better back then, too, by golly! Real candy cigarettes in a real fake package like Marlboro and Kent and all. Did I mention the really, really neat halloween whistles for a nickel made out of wax? (It was real wax too back on the wax standard!) (And they were real, METAL nickels too NOT the crummy wooden kind!)

There's a store a few blocks away that still stocks ye olde wax juice bottles and other generic versions of vintage candy, or whatever you want to call it. Actually it's CVS, but I haven't seen those things anywhere else. They're good, but too bad kiddie trick-or-treaters wouldn't appreciate them. We gave them out as party favors at my great aunt's 60th birthday bash, and someone managed to bring a bunch of those candy cigarettes too.

Wow, I remember those. We saw them in the gift shops candy section, Contemporary Hotel, Walt Disney World, last year. Even the huge candy store we went to in Excalubur (Vegas) didn't have those.
