why do people cut themselves?

I only cut myself once in my childhood, and it was on my forearm too. The artery looked so inviting. I wasn't able to bring myself to cut deep enough, although I still have the scar. I can't remember why I did it though, and funnily enough, I only now remembered that I had done it, even after talking to others about their cutting.
