Something in the Sea of Rhun

Call me a detail freak if you will....... Since the movie of The Fellowship Of the Ring came out I thought it'd be a good time to dig out the book for another read. I'm still wondering, if anybody would know: what does the stippled area in the Sea of Rhun on the map of Middle Earth represent? I've roved around the internet tonight and not turned up anything yet; thus far I've presumed it's a sandbank or shallow area.

Are you sure the lines weren't jsut put there as contrast between the land and the sea?

see attached pic; should have done this earlier I guess. I scanned this from the map at the back of the books. It could be some sort of sandbar, but it's pretty big.

It is definitivley an island. As such it is marked on the original map drwan by JRR Tolkien him self. In the reproduction in The History of Middle-Earth volume 7 The Treason of Isengard it is seen without such dots on it.

An island, yeah.

It could appear to be any number of other things though...

An underwater Entmoot? A whale breeding ground? It doesn't look like an island on my map, I think a sandbar is more likely.

LOL, Arathorn! But I think most likely that's not it . . . although I have no good ideas as to what it is.

Thanks guys. Findegal, any chance you could scan your bit of the map? I had to crop it a lot and use greyscale/about 40dpi tp get it below 10kb.

Ta

PS. I presumed it wasn't an island because it doesn't look like, for example, Himring.

Nazgul The island in the Sea of Rhûnaer

For anyone interested, here is a scan of the relevant part of the map Findegil is referring to, as an attachment.

I always assumed it was a shallow part filled with reeds, cattails, lily pads, and such.

Or it could be where some tea was spilled....

Gollum

I bet Snowdog is right, it does seem like a reedy, lily-paddy (lily-paddy? oh, well) sort of area in the water.

Cool. I never even noticed it. Guess I should study the map more closely Well as much as I like all your musings, I'll go with Findegil on it being an island.
