Used to show mini-dachshunds. Evil little bastards. Does that not seem like the root of all evil?

i used to show Staffie-Bulls (aka Staffordshire Bull Terriers)

I once showed a bitch for a friend of mine. She was sold as a puppy but was so nerotic by the time she was 1 year old that the owners brought her back to the breeder (my friend). My friend asked if I could train her in a week for a show she had her registered for. I told her not to count on much and I agreed to help her out.

Let me explain. This bitch was couped up in a kennel all day long (for up to 10 hours a day) while the owners worked. The moment she was let out of her kennel, she would race around the room as fast as she could, bouncing off of furniture and knocking stuff down. So, the owners would put her back in her kennel.

When I got her home, I took the door off of her kennel. And I let her lay on my lap on the couch for hours while I pet her and watched TV or read books. After a few hours, I would train her with affection and treats. She would do anything for me.

In one week, she was trained so well, she won the dog show. My friend, the breeder, asked me to keep her at my house for a while and show her at dog shows for her.

After a while, this bitch and I became great friends and I bought her from the breeder before she could be sold to a man who wanted to keep her in a kennel and breed her with his dog.

She died a few years ago of cancer, but she was the best dog I ever had.

I don't show dogs, but I really love them - we've pretty much always had one. I used to train and show horses, tho, so I know the whole show thing, and I love watching the Westminster Kennel Club show every year.

Our current dog is a stray that we got off the streets - best dog we've ever had! Looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog/shepherd mix. Great camper, and great with kids, and I feel safer having him at home - he's a big ol' guy with a scary-sounding bark.

Sounds like a great dog, Ruinel - that's the bad part about having dogs, they don't live long enough I hope Buster is just as good for you.

Cute dog, BOP! Is that your dog that you have now? (or do you have one now?)

No, wish I could say it was, but it's just some random 'net pix to illustrate how evil dachies are.

Speaking of dogs...Let me introduce you to the First Dog, "Frodo", of President Hectorberlioz and First Lady Dreran the Green.

I'm not a big fan of showing dogs, but that's probably because I'm not a big fan of most purebred dogs (the only purebred dogs I would ever buy are GSDs, Huskies, or Boxers, and even then I'd rather get them from the shelter). I don't know, maybe it's just the risk of the inbreeding and then genetic problems in show quality dogs.

A lot of them are pretty though.

I don't really like poodles in a show cut. I feel embarassed for the dog...haha.

I haven't been involved in Dog Breed shows, however, I have been involved in obedience trials. My own dog - a Golden Retriever, went to obedience training and although I didn't enter her into any trials I was a steward at several trials. It was exhausting!! I had to run around and organise all the people with their dogs - and they were so stressed when I told them that it was nearly their turn!!

Isn't the point of purebreeds to have dogs that can be registered through the AKC to prevent innerbreeding?I've been looking into breeding my golden retriever and I've been told you look into thier papers to make sure you aren't mixing lines etc. Wouldn't there be a greater chance of innerbreeding with a dog with no paper history?
