It might have been better for you to call this thread "Praises only for RotK", and then post something like "post only compliments here for RotK/TTT/FotR movies... and PJ." See, then we would understand that this thread was not for different opinions from your own.

btw ~ i also don't see anything wrong with a movie that is nothing more than escapism... some of my favorites are

there are certainly both good and bad "pure action flicks"... i'd be interested to see how people rate LoTR on this level? maybe it falls short in the epic drama category, but is it a good escape??

Interesting...

My impression from early on in the thread is that certain posters were 'talking down to' those who disliked Ebert's review, long before any strong response by Elfhelm or anyone else.

I won't point fingers... just go to the beginning of the thread and work your way through. Read the posts and see for yourself. Some of it was quite condescending.

And I still think Ebert's review was targeted at the story (as in fantasy setting and creatures / genre), more than at the movie. I stated so on second post of page 2.

Okay, here's the way it is. We will discuss the review and only the review. You do not have to agree with Ebert. You do not have to agree with other posters. You do have to be civil and you do have to respect the opinions of others even if you do not agree. That's the way it is. Anymore "flaming" "flame baiting" or "personal attacks" this thread will be closed.

that's worse than closing a thread!

i would be interested in hearing if anyone who didn't think the movie lived up to it's potential (i.e. hated it) still could enjoy it as an escape-type movie

from what i've read in the ebert review, he seems to be saying that a fantasy-based movie can only be an escape at best... was his problem that it tried to be more, or is it not even a good escape movie?

I could watch it a few times as an escape type movie. I have said this. merry and pippin and the lame jokes and so forth would still get on my nerves. I would therefore not be watching it very often. The stuff gets old quickly. Also - the movie is too jumpy. In my opinion. except for the scenary and special effects - it's not a very good film - even if it didn't have Lord of the Rings as it's title. I however think that as it has Lord of the Rings as it's title - it has a certain obligation to live up to a certain standard.

It's jumpy because the books are jumpy. LoTR is not your conventional book and as was mentioned in the TTT appendicies had it been written today it probably would have been rejected.

JD thankyou for replying, ive been spending my waking hours working and at the cinema so i havent been on for a few days... I still dont think that PJ's handling/butchering Flight to the Ford and omitting Scouring of the Shire count as reasons to say he's not a fan, you don't have to like every single aspect of a story to still be a fan, just because he doesnt like everything you like...
and another thing i also dont see whats wrong with PJ saying a reason to make the movies was for a cool fantasy action, action is also a factor of Tolkien and maybe a reason why PJ liked LotR, if thats was his only aim well thats a different story...

At least he didn't make the mistake I saw one reviewer make. On one review site, the reviewer called Shelob's Lair a scene "straight out of Harry Potter!"

True. The Cave Troll of Moria was from Harry Potter, but totally not Shelob's lair.
