But what happens when you've lived 10's of thousands of years here and you grow tired of this life? Would there be an option to give up your life willingly? |

If immortality could be achieved through bio-technology or gen-engeneering or something like it; I think I would try to stop it from becoming available to the public. Not on moral grounds, but more on practical ones. Imagine if everyone became immortal: health services would become thoroughly shortcoming, all remaining ecosystems would be destroyed to make place for the expanding population, not to mention food shortages; whole societies would collapse IMO. Much of the balance of our surroundings depends on our 'short' life-span. Not to mention that I expect every genetic tampering to have a back lash some generations later. Immortality could -indeed quite ironically- become the death of us.

There is a burgeoning movement to achieve this now.

I believe being able to achieve immortality would cheapen life. And, hey, no one would ever know if we REALLY achieved immortality, would they?

Re: Immortality question?

As for the issues of limited resources, pollution, etc, if our technology were so advanced that we could prolong life indefinitely, I'm pretty sure we'd have solutions for all kinds of other problems. I'm not sure I'd be terribly interested in immortality for myself, though. My fondest dream is that this can't last forever, and once it's over there's nothing else. Still, now that I'll be passing 40 in a few weeks I can see how it would be appealing to some people. **shrug** as for the whole burial thing.... UGH!.... I've left instructions that once any useful body parts have been harvested, I'd like the unused portion of my body to be cremated.... |
