I have two swords, a very standard looking broadsword, and a samurai sword[technically it's called a no-dachi], I plan on buying narsil, that sword kicks butt.

Completely random 4AM thought: I like swords.

But I'm creative. I design my own:

Iberian Falcata with a half-blade on the reverse side, a blade on the parrier guard, and a pistol grip. Yummy.

Very nice design, Wayfarer. You seem to know your way around swords.

Yes, people who like blades! I am a semi-serious collector with well over a hundred knives, but only one short sword, which of course is Sting from the LOtR movies made by United Cutlery. I hope to end up with all the swords, but money is an issue. I also have all but one of the daggers from the Knights of the Round Table collection, the Phoenix from the movie "Solo", countless pocket knives, two bowie knives, a Panga (sort of a short sword) that I bought off a Masai warrior in Africa, about ten tactical blades, and a couple boot knives, throwing knives and stars and two cheap knives from Mexico that look cool but have no combat value. If you want to see some truly beautiful handmade knives there is a site called Bladeforums.com and I believe they are in General and under The Gallery.

Hey, nice giant canopener.

Sorry, had to.

I'm getting a boken, but that doesn't count at all.

Well I finally broke down and bought a genuine battle axe after years of promising to. this things a big one. weighs probably as much as some of the younger mooters. its a keeper. next I want to get two Halberds. To hang crossed in the entranceway to my den. Then maybe a war hammer or a mace. Iron wood with a huge hard forged spiked head. Big enough to crack a bowling ball. how sweet will that be.

Probably weighs as much as me.

Nice sword, Wayfarer--I like it.

For the summer (and the movie I am making with Eruviel Greenleaf and another friend) I was designated the weaponsmaster and had a bunch of pointy things in my basement...but the best was the claymore. It's beautiful. It's nearly as tall as I am (about four feet and 10 inches--add three more and it's me) and it's got a loverly hilt and I swear it weighs as much as my school backpack.

I'll try to get pics up...it's gorgeous.

I have a dummy question: in Pirates of the Caribbean, Orlando Bloom has a line when he's presenting the sword to the Governor: "the tang is as wide as the [something or other -- can one of you who knows the movie by heart fill in the rest?]." What did that mean? What exactly is the "tang?" (I love swords and have a few, but as I have no one but those on this thread with whom to discuss them, I don't know some of the physical terminology. )

I don't know the rest of the quote, but a tang is the continuation of the blade into the handle. All swords and fixed blades have a tang of some kind. When you see a strip of metal in between two wood pieces on a hunting knife? That is the tang. There are alot of different kinds of tangs, full tang, half tang, rat tail, etc. The strongest is a full tang since you are basically holding part of the blade. Hope that helps, I am a sucky explainer of things. sorry.

That's a fine explanation.
Um...yes. Tangs are good things. EG has a decorative sword (we refer to it affectionately as "the wussy holy sword" ) and it's not got much of a tang at all...consequently, the hilt is twisting off...

I think it's something like "the tang is as wide as the blade" or similar...anyway. It's a good thing, whatever it is--I remember that.

Mmmm...pointy, edged objects. Sweeeeeeeeeet.

Wayf, that's one cool-looking sword! And here I was thinking you're knowledge of chopping and smashing objects was merely academic, not experential.

Oh no, that's a good explanation!
I'll have to get the full quote so I can understand what he meant.

Sharp pointy objects

I am an avid sword and knife collector. You might try- Bud k for your throwing knives and stars. I have quite a few swords and knives. By the way, full tang is a term that is used to describe if the blade continues all the way up the grip. Most swords are made with a Rat Tail design. This means that where the blade ends at the grip, the grip has a seperate piece of steel welded to the end of the blade. I do know of other resources that might help members if you are interested. Just let me know. Thanks....
