I, a Brit, was in NYC at the time of the blackout. I was in the Financial District, near Wall Street and Battery Park when everyone started pouring onto the streets- many thought it wa s a bomb scare or some such.

People just surged along the street and I couldn't get a taxi back to my hotel in the Upper West Side so I had to walk 50 blocks!

I heard about it earlier. Supposedly a tree landed on an electrical line in Northern Italy. They don't really know if that's the cause yet - but that's what they were suspecting right now.

You might be forgiven for thinking that a developed country ought to be able to guarantee power supplies, but the problem is that the power generation business is in crisis. They've been forced to mothball power stations because they're not needed most of the time and just appear as redundant expenses on the balance sheet. This means that there's no spare capacity and it just takes a minor problem to cripple the whole system.

I've a mate who works in this business and he says that the UK can expect similar power cuts within the next 18 months.

This is what you get if you let accountants run the world.

Actually - here it's more a matter of people screaming NIMBY - Not In MY BackYard. New York has tried to build a new power station for years only to have citizens groups scream that they don't want it around them. People have to realize that if they want power - the power stations have to go somewhere.

Same problem with prisons, and garbage dumps, and halfway houses for troubled people. (IMO) If the press would back out of politics and quit treating the political process like some celebrity popularity contest, maybe politicians would make decsions with the people's/country's best interests in mind. (not just re-election)

Couldn't agree more. As the Gaffer's Gaffer used to say "if nuclear power is so safe, why don't they store the waste under the Houses of Parliament?" to which the answer was unclear...
