Wars and Rumours of War

The past two weeks have been eventful!

News has actually been interesting enough to keep me off the computer. (Some!)

From Israel, to Yemin, to Serbia, to the Debates, to the Stock Market free fall, things have gotten very interesting.

A history professor once told me that the Chinese had an ancient curse:

Or, as Professor Tolkien put it, in THE HOBBIT:

Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a good deal of telling anyway.

This little hobbit hopes that things do not get very much more interesting!

... of living 900 kilometres from nowhere, and not having the willpower to do anything about the world's problems.

It's terrible that after coming so close to peace, the Middle East has erupted into what could be another war. And it looks like Americans abroad are again the target of extremist terrorists.

As for the debates... international news is important right now, but did they need to spend 42 minutes on foreign policy that both candidates largely agreed on?

Elanor: I had the same problem with some of my images. It appears that geocities has suddenly become case-sensitive. Either go into your File Manager and change the name of the file to all lower-case or just change the address in your sig to match the capitalization that's already there. Either that will solve the problem or geocities has another new problem.

Personally, I think a permanent peace agreement in the Middle East would be very interesting. Why can't we have that sort of excitement? :/

bmilder, Al Gore's personal friend, Jim Lehrer, who moderated the debate, spent the first half of it trying to trip up GWBush because of the media perception that Bush is a lightweight in the foreign policy arena.

Obviously, he isn't a bumbling babbler, but it took Lehrer 42 minutes to realize it.

Actually, the foreign policy differences between the candidates are quite great. Gore's foreign policy, like his domestic, is one of ever greater centralization and attempted control. Bush is no Pat Buchanan, but would be far less likely to intervene abroad and far more likely to rebuild our military than Gore. During times of international crisis, most politicians of stature will NOT openly communicate about policy differences, unless it is a matter of national security. Like Churchill prior to WWII, the GOP has been warning of the potential consequences to the erosion and deterioration of our military. This was not underscored heavily enough in the debates perhaps.
