Elrond's age

Hey I was wondering what Elrond's age was when the Fellowship departed from Rivendell?

Hard to say, as most Elves ages are hard to figure out because there is no accurate point of reference. Elrond was born at the end of The First Age, so I would say he was probably about 3,000 years old, if not more. The First age only lasted 500 plus. It was the shortest age. I believe the Third age was the longest.

Around 6500 years. He was born late in the first age to Elwing and Earendil; foster raised by Maglor after the destruction of his hometown by the Feanorians who were trying to get the Silmaril that Elwing had. He spent most of the 2nd age as a Lieutenant of various positions for Gil-Galad, his third cousin once removed. He married his 2nd cousin twice removed, Celebrian.

Why 7,000 years?

According to the The Encyclopedia of Arda at:

http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/

at the time of the Council of Elrond he had lived in Middle-Earth for about 6,500 years.

Search the alphabetical index for 'Elrond'

Made more precise to around 6500. 2nd age is 3441 years, plus most of third age 3019 (3021 minus 2) years, plus born some years, 20 to 50, before the end of the first age.

I have done this in the past, and I will tell you that the Encyclopedia of Arda is not a reliable source. It isn't even updated on a regualar basis.

Yes they can be a bit suspect on certain subjects but I think they got it right this time.

Oooookay. Doesn't make it factual.

He's at least 6420, and since he was born to Earendil he must have been born some time in the last few decades of the first age. Dating is sketchy but it has to be sometime between the fall of Doriath and the end. Does HoME have dating of the end of the first age?

In HoME vol 11 Christopher Tolkein documents the changes made to the chronology of the History of Middle-Earth, he states:
Quote:
'600 Here ends the First Age (later changed to 590)'
and
Quote:
'Elros was born 532, 58 years before the Second Age began ( this agrees with the changed date of 590)'
So this gives a birthdate for Elrond as 532 if he and Elros were twins however there is conflicting information about this in HoME vol 5. But that's another thread!

That's almost 6500, making the Encyclopedia essentially correct.

Just ead the (6 versions) of tale of the years in HoME XII, the 532 and 590 dates are the last version for their two events, but appear in different (partial) drafts.
that make 58 + 3441 + 3019 = 6498, +/-a year for cumulative rounding error.

Yeah they were twins!
i read..."Elros chose to be mortal, although he was granted a life span of five centuries...At the beginning of the Second Age, Elros led the surviving Edain to Numenor and became their first King. Elros took the name of Tar Minyatur and ruled Numenor from the year 32 to 442."

You would have to check with someone else though because that may not be 100% right!

In Tolkien's very early drafts of the Downfall of Numenor Elrond was the only child of Earendel and Elwing and was the first ruler. HoME vol 5

Elros was added later after Tolkein began to further develop the Numenorean legend. I think this example really shows how the history of ME developed and was constantly changing in Tolkien's mind. Fascinating
