Hobbits origins

I was re-reading the Sil lately and had a strange thought. Aule created the dwarves... What if Manwe created the hobbits. I've read almost all Tolkien in print and never really came across an explanation of their origin. Can anybody offer some information on this topic? And what do you think of my idea? Thanks.

Supposedly they are a variant of men. A race (subspecoes) or perhaps another species.

There is a thread about hobbit origins here. Because it is an old thread, I guess this one can remain open for some fresh discussion. Sister Golden Hair might want this moved to the Middle-Earth forum, though.

I was a bit irritated when the Sil didn't explain where they came from... I'd agree that they're probably part Men, but then wouldn't you think they'd have to be something like Men/Dwarf hybrids? I don't know, but that's how I'd theorise they got the height... Maybe I'm just stuck on that aspect of them. They definitely have fantastic metabolisms; seven meals a day!

Perhaps evolution works more radily in ME and a race of men can adapt for a reduced stature and other charges in just a few thousand years. They could some discarded genectic engineering project of Morgoth.

I have not yet got the "The peoples of ME" in The history of ME, but I would expect if there were a definitive answer there, we would have seen it posted here already.
