Amon Lanc

When was it built?

Why was it deserted?

When did it become Dol Guldor?

I have personally never heard of Amon Lanc, but according to the Encyclopedia of Arda:
Quote:
A hill in the southern parts of Greenwood the Great. After a millennium of the Third Age had passed, Sauron came to Amon Lanc and built a stronghold there. The hill and fortress were then together called Dol Guldur, and the wood it which it stood became known as Mirkwood.
Hope that helps.

MM helped me out.

What they posted was correct BUT theyndid not add that it was at one time the dwelling place of Thranduil's father.

Where did you hear about Amon Lanc? I've never heard of it before. Is it in one of the Histories of Middle Earth?

In UT in the History of Galadriel the dubious heritage of Thardanduil is explained.

Amon Lanc "The Naked Hill"

It is also briefly mentioned in Unfinished Tales in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields.

Well there you go. I'd never heard of it either but you learn something new every day.

I tried the UTs once but couldn't get into them. Maybe now I've read the Sil they will make more sense. What was Thranduil's dubious past?
