how do you see these places

1) Annuminas before its desertion
2) Fornost before its fall
3) the halls of Thrandruil
4) The grey havens

I think great marble-like structures for them all. To tired to say much else.

Well ive always had a really strong image fo the grey havens.

Its kind of a very quiet natural place, quite like lothlorien i suppose. and there is white mist in the mornings all over the floor making it really beautiful. and all the people just are happy. sappy i know, but thats what i see.

I would picture the people at the Grey Havens as sad, seeing as how a good deal of Elves go there to sail away, never to be seen again, like all the magic and beauty is to pass away with them.

I've always thought of Thranduil's abode as a bigger, rather green Lothlorien. A whole big network of tree dwellings with hidden vaults for prisons in hollow trees. The throne room is the highest platform.

The grey havens are very grey. (duh) I've always imagined them as a foggy place which one would only come to at night or in the early morning.I've always had the weird thought that once the ships reached the edge of the peir, they were gone for good, out of anyone's sight or vision...almost magically vanished.

As for the other two places, I'll have to read the Silm. again before I have the faintest remembrance as to what they are!

thrandruil's realm "main dwelling" is an underground cave complex

OOPS again. I haven't read the Hobbit for awhile either. Can anyone tell? But why would elves live underground? They couldn't even see the stars.

This is making no sense at all.

Thank you for helping me out with that, Afro-Elf. Yes, I seem to remember elven underground dwellings now. Now I must go check out the Silm. again from the library and read all about them once again!

It was not natural for the Elves to live underground and they only did so in great need, for protection from the evil forces, especially in the First Age. They prefered the open fields, green grass, and trees. They had a great love for nature.

I'll pass on the first two, because I really have no idea....

the halls of Thranduil - big and impressive caves, but I can imagine it gets a little gloomy. Lots of runes on the walls, attempts at making the place beautiful, with pillars and carvings and skylights, but it would never live up to its predecessor, Menegroth. Some gold, silver, and bronze; Thranduil liked shiny things (gold, jewels, etc), but he didn't have an ample supply of them.

The grey havens - gray beaches and gray-white misty inlets, white buildings overlooking the Sea where the Cirdan and his buddies live. Large white boats gracing the harbor. A gray dock. Everything smells like salt. Lots of cool fog, giving it a dreamlike quality. The dim sun casting a half-light upon everything. There is something very compelling about the Sea; it must be hard to look away from. Not only is it vast and beautiful, but it's also the road to an entirely different world, so to speak.

When I first read The Hobbit, the places where they kept the dwarves I pictured as underground, but they where connected to a great winding hall made of live trees, the spaces filled with...something. And there was a river or stream flowing through the hall.

I'm much better at imagining people than places. The opposite was true of Tolkien, so he said.

Mithlond...

I imagine the quays hewn into the cliffs with the surf breaking over them; a mist wreathing the elven ships and abodes overlooking the sea; dusk twilight casting everything in multi-hued greys...

I imagined cliffs at the havens, too. I can see Frodo and co. walking along a wide open space with scattered tall trees, then suddenly reaching the top of the cliff and looking down into the havens - a bunch of small, curvy coves with beautiful ships waiting. Then climbing down stairs carved in the cliffs and ... leaving Middle Earth forever ...

There is a place up the coast from me a bit like that - big tall eucalyptus trees blowing in the wind from the ocean on top of cliffs, overlooking little sandy coves with nice rocks to climb on.
