Glorfindel query
In The Silmarillion Glorfindel falls to his death battling a balrog, yet in Fellowship he helps Frodo to Rivendell. Is this just a case of two elves with the same name, did Tolkien make a mistake or is their some explanation to this in elven physiology?

I think this has been discussed in another thread; you might want to do a search on it.

I always thought it was the same guy; I just answered a question based on that!

It's a good question but I don't think any one can give you a straight answer.
The only place where we can even come close to the right answer is in The Peoples of Middle-earth (The History of Middle-earth Vol. 12): XIII Last Writings, Glorfindel Glorfindel of Rivendell was not conceived as the same character as Glorfindel of Gondolin. was the first statement released so we assumed that everything was cleared up, but then Tolkien backtracks and says that Glorfindel's spirit returned to the Halls of Waiting, but was after a time re-embodied by the Valar. He then returned to Middle-earth (either in the mid-Second Age, or as a companion of the Istari in the Third). So there is no 100 % right answer in this situation, though most people I have talked to do consider them the same person. Hope this helps!

This is from Nolendil.
There's probably been multiple topics asking the same question. The "two" Glorfindels are the same. Glorfindel died in Gondolin, his spirit went to Mandos, his body was eventually remade for him and he lived in Valinor for thousands of years. In II 1600 (the Year of Dread when the One Ring was forged) he returned to Middle-earth (probably in the company of the Blue Wizards) to fight Sauron. Hence his leaving when Sauron died for good. Azalea, the bright eyes don't have much to do with it. All the Elves had especially bright eyes, it was the key differences between Elves and Men. |
