This cafe with a random name is a place where all are welcome. Have a cup of tea and sit down with your friends.

What do you guys like talking about outside of the 'Moot? With all the anger that seems to be going on lately, I just want to talk with my 'Moot buddies about interesting subjects, that have nothing to do with Lord of the Rings! (Or any other flammable topic.)

Perhaps we've all come to see each other as one sided, based mostly on our views of Lord of the Rings books and/or movies.

Now we have a chance to talk about anything, as long as it does not lead to anger, name calling, or vehement disagreement.

~~~
To kick it all off, I was wondering today how the first tools were made. You need iron tools to make more iron tools, and I don't imagine you can shape bronze with a rock.
By the way, feel free to ask me questions about forestry or biology! I'm studying forestry at university and I love talking about it.
Cheers everyone!
Nurvingiel, Nurvingiel, Nurvingiel. :) Dear sweet Nurvingiel. :)
All that you witnessed in the LotR movie forum does not spill out to anywhere else. You will see people in the movie forum that vehemently feud in the LotR movie threads, yet agree here in the GM forum, or elsewhere on the board. I can't explain the conundrum, other than... in some areas we agree and some areas we don't. But none of it spills out to the other threads and forums. :)
I've been on this board since Feb. of this year, and you've been here longer, but I've never seen anyone hold a grudge outside the movie forum. :D I hope you haven't either.
I hope this settles your fears. :)
I don't like tea.
Nurvingiel
I know people don't hold grudges outside the movie forum, but this thread would be off topic in that forum. Recently, there has been a level of anger that I don't understand. Within threads, I try to mitigate things a little bit, but I thought there should be a place where people could...
Like my failed attempts at mitigation, I'm not sure how far this will get. But I at least want someone to answer my question about tools. :D
And no one's going to make you drink tea Wayfarer. :rolleyes:
...
You know, I had something really witty and cynical that I was going to say in response to that, but it seems to have slipped my mind.
Bah.
Nurvingiel, the reason you don't see grudges spilling over is because people aren't actually angry. Loud, brazen, vehement, and ocassionally obnoxious, but not angry.
Nurvingiel
12-06-2003, 02:53 AM
Are you sure? Because it doesn't seem normal. Maybe it's just me being overly sensitive.
I am never that rude (as I have seen people be) unless I am actually angry.
Hi Nurvingiel!
Entmoot has become rather boring of late, hasn't it. The same people keep saying the same things over and over, again and again. It's getting rather annoying. I wish movie haters would stay out of the movie forum, and "movie only" lovers would stay out of the book forum. Many people on here don't really care THAT much! Take your excessive anger somewhere else! :rolleyes:
So, anyway, I guess I need to buy a Christmas tree, but I have no room to put one! I'm going to have to create a space, which means moving furniture. Too much work! I know once the tree is in, it will be beautiful. I like to just let it stand undecorated for awhile. Trees look so lovely on their own! But everybody is waiting for the decorations. I think I will eliminate a lot of decs this year. It seems to be a less is more year for me.
Well you start with copper which is a soft ore that can be found in its natural state and shaped rather easily without the need for iron or any other metal. you can make copper weapons using wooden mallets to beat the copper into form. Humans started doing this around 8000 BC. About 3000 years later someone finally realized if you can get the fire hot enough you can actually melt copper and thereby be able to make whatever you want from it. They then took this thinking and combined molton copper with tin and create a harder material called Bronze. and thus the bronze age begins. Bout 1500 BC the Hittites realized that if you could got your fire even hotter you could actually melt iron ore into liquid and iron, of course, was much harder then bronze or copper. and iron ore was everywhere so it was an incredible break through in man's history. so basically you dont really need iron tools to make more iron tools you just need to be able to get a fire hot enough the melt the stuff then you can just pour it into a spade shaped or hammer head shaped hole made right in the earth and in a few hours you have yourself some crude iron tools which you can then use to make more and next thing you know we have silicon wafers and expresso machines. class dismissed.
Ooooo I LOVE tea! :D
So what exactly is forest-what'sit all about? Is it about knowing what kinds of trees there are or it a more indepth kind of 'how to save and care for the forest' thing?
What fun would that be? :D After all, it's not the "movie lovers" forum, now is it? ;) :D And besides, that certainly wouldn't be fair,now would it.
After all, I don't keep people who disagree with me out of my threads. I actually encourage the exchange of ideas. And if you look through my threads, many people have helped other mooters with riding themselves of erroneous information (ie, Brill and Catholicism in the REAL debate about RELIGION thread).
However, I think people misunderstand. I know I'm not really angry when I voice my disagreements in the movie threads, no matter what I say or what smilie I put up. ;)
Would you like some one or two lumps, Lizra? :) *stirs sugar into her tea*
I'll take two lumps. (and I'm not reading anymore about movie/book/love/hate....I really don't care what anyone thinks anymore. :mad: ) I have a sore throat, so make it honey....Beorning honey wood do the trick. I think I'll leave that mispelling! It seems to fit in this "tea party in a forest" thread. :) Pull up a toadstool. Thanks for the leson IR. I hope I can find an 8 foot tall fir tree for less than $50! There seems to be all sorts of trees in this forest, but they are much to pretty to cut. Maybe we should decorate one!
I was reading earlier today about Old English, and that Eorl (or perhaps it was something i dont remember) meant warrior. And I thought: eorlingas. And of course, Tolkien based their language on Old English, so there we have it.
I am not familiar with these movie disputes. I'm amazed people haven't mentioned the political threads.
Oh, by the way, I brought some Russian Tea Cakes.
*Hands the honey to Lizra*. :) There ya go sweety. I hope that sore throat heals soon. :) I had one about a week and a half ago. I was worried the little darlings at the school I was substituting for gave me strep. Glad it's not strep though, I don't have health insurance. :cool:
Yea! Takes a cheese scone and English breakfast tea with no milk or sugar.
You know Lizra, if there already is a thread like this, maybe we should all head out to a tea party in the forest. I don't want to be redundant.
That sounds more fun anyway - I love being outside!
Eorl - son of Leod, founded Rohan's dynasty.
From his name, probably, came 'the Eorlingas' - but anyway, it would be again from the word eorl in Old English.
What's a Russian cake? Why do you call it Russian?
I'll have a piece anyway, if you don't mind, because it is a cake after all. :)
There are a lot of people disgreeing with things on the book forum - whether orcs came from men or elves or whether balrog's had wings. Just to name two.
By the way - what movie haters are you talking about I'm wondering? I gave the movies a C - so it can't be me you are talking about. :p And just because you don't care that much - doesn't mean others don't. I happen to care however.
You can IM me if you have AIM. :) But there are several places where Tolkien said it was Elves. Treebeard in Lord of the Rings says that it was elves. I consider the Lord of the Rings books - to be the key source because that is the published version. Then the Silmarillion, then letters.
*hands the tray of tea cakes and sandwiches to JD* Care for any?
I happen to agree with your point, JD. [edit: looks like you posted after I started this post] The point about the book forum. I haven't seen anything really that is out of control... not what I would consider out of control, at least. I certainly understand SGH's position though. I know that some people complained about the discussions appearing heated and angry. It's rather hard to read the emotions the poster has through the text. :) I personally don't hold any grudges toward anyone at the book forum, Black Breathalizer included.
Tessar: as for the "forest-what'sits"... do you mean "forestry"?
Tessar: as for the "forest-what'sits"... do you mean "forestry"? Haha. In answer to Tessar's earlier question:
Forestry is a very diverse subject. I'm in a degree where we learn to manage the forest, so our different subjects include biology of various kinds, conservation, and forest operations (which is essentially 'how to get the lumber out of the forest'). You can focus on any one of these areas, or on research in Forest Sciences. I chose the 'big picture' approach, but they are all equally important and valid.
I actually prefer Earl Grey to English Breakfast. I'll have that for my next cup.
I see that. But I also know that in the Silmarillion it goes into even more detail on the creation of orcs from elves. So taking the two together - it is elves. I don't think a letter Tolkien wrote only 2 years before his death - when he might have forgotten what he had already published (LotR) or written (The Silmarillion) - is reliable.
But it doesn't directly say in LotR that theyr're from Elves. It says "counterfeits". As it also does in HoME X, I believe. They were made from Men (or a mix of Men and Elves) in mockery/as a counterfeit to Elves. That's my opinion, at least.
I really hope the threads in the movie-forum will become less "violent" when RotK has been out for a while (I don't think EE will make it any worse).
I would leap heartily into this debate on elves and orcs, but I really don't have an opinion on this one.
Orcs are a twisted version of Elves, wether they were once Elves or were made in mockery of them. That's good enough for me.
Here's a good question to add to that thought: Can Orcs breed? Request: Let's please not mention the weird orc-membrane-mud-pit scene from TTT, and base this discussion solely on the books.
Grrr! I always seem to miss the snow. In January this year we had about six inches, they said, fall on the east coast of the UK in just a few hours. So much so soon that there were cars stranded overnight on the M11 motorway, and the buses and trains couldn't run (don't laugh - that's a LOT of snow for us :D).
And where was I then? About five miles away from the edge of it. So near and so far - I never saw a flake. Not one. Not even the thought of one! :rolleyes:
I'm just not the type of person that will run away and let someone run a show when I completely disagree with them. Silence is a sign of agreement or acceptance. I'm just glad that now civility is being forced and I don't have to hear how if you don't like the movies - you want a page by page book to screen movie. or that if you don't like the movies - you don't understand movie making, or the very deragatory use of the Purist phrase. That I had the biggest problem with. Sometimes you have to rock the boat a little to bring people's attention to how out of control things are getting.
I think I sat on my toadstool too long, It's getting flat! :eek: (toadstool plumping time) There! Thank goodness our snow melted! Today will be a good day for Christmas shopping. The tree is up! I found a lovely tall but thin, Frasier fur for $30. Since my husband just had nasal surgery and can't do any heavy lifting, I brought the tree in, and put it in the stand myself! (What an elf! :D ) I'm going to put only the most beautiful of the beautiful ornaments on it. In fact, I'm not even going to open that second box! I should take it to Goodwill today and have them out of my life for ever!
JD, you're sipping tea and being pleasant....how nice! :) Now, all this tea is making me feel extra "frank" and "real" ....( :rolleyes: ;) )
Things here at EM have deteriorated so badly (in the movie forum) that I don't read it anymore either. I go to another Tolkien message board (gasp!) to discuss the movies. I know BB started it, but we should all know his tounge in cheek comments are merely HIS opinion. He started it, but this is the type of thing that doesn't need, or deserve, "a finish". BB is just trying to get a rise out of whoever, for amusement. If you ignore his baited remarks (or chuckle, or say "that's an interesting but goofy opinion" ) they will soon become inconsequential.
JD, I came VERY close to putting you on my ignore list recently...not that you should really care, but it is weird to want to put someone you usually enjoy on your ignore list. BB's remarks are obvious one-sided sparks, and your (and others) repeated (in content and number) hot air replies have fanned the silly sparks into a huge flame, like a testosterone spewing bellows. If I were you (and I'm not of course) I would put him on my ignore list, and mellow out. If I had a magic wand, I would send you an over sexed girlfriend, a personal masseuse, several pounds of chocolate, and some kind of special pipeweed. (I feel an "I'll speak my mind as often as I please" lecture coming on. )
Ahh! The tea is invigorating! Look ladies....I brought several pairs of Luthien slippers! Lets dance lithly and sensually round the toadstools, till JD is mesmerized and hypnotized. ;) If BB comes by, someone stuff him with cheese scones till he can't speak. Then we'll tickle him till he gets nauseous.
Well - unlike you I will not put ANYONE on my ignore list. I coudl have ignored his ridiculous comments, and allowed him to make deragatory statements toward the book fans. For what purpose? So he could continue on and on and on? Now he's stopped - that's all that matters. Sorry you wanted to put me on your ignore list - but as you said - not that I should care. if you choose to - or anyone chooses to - that is their option. It doesn't affect me - it affects only you. I can reply to you - and you have no idea what I say.
You obviously like to avoid conflict - I don't necessarily like conflict - but I'm not going to just ignore something for the sake of peace. if I have a problem with something that someone says - I will say it. Oh well - you went to another board to talk about the movies. I'm sure they are much more movie friendly then.
If BB is just trying to get a rise out of people then - he should be stopped - he wasn't being stopped - until now as I said. It just took the "movie moron" comment to bring it about - and I don't regret it. It worked. Sometimes the end justifies the means.
As for being nice - I am generally nice - unless you are not nice to me or you attack me.
By the way - i don't get hypnotized or mezmorized - so you will have to just deal with me. I am Rebel Leader.
Well I am gald if the movie forum is under control. With the ROTK coming, I look forward to it's discussion, just so long as it doesn't become an argument over who is right.
JD I'm not saying you should agree with everyone (BB) It is good that you stand for what you believe and will speak about it openly. But just because one disagrees with you, doesn't mean you are wrong. BB's derogatory statements were unnecessary if they were ignored, then he wouldn't have created any effect and I think he would have stopped. If he has stopped then great! I'll be stopping in the movie forums to see what everyone thinks of ROTK. :D
Death By Chocolate™ Cookies
Makes about 20.
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons unsweetened alkalized cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons light corn syrup
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled to tepid
9 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted and cooled to tepid
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled to tepid
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1. Set the oven at 325 degrees. Line several cookie sheets with parchment paper.
2. Sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
3. In an electric mixer, beat the eggs, sugar, and corn syrup on moderately low speed for 1 minute. Blend in the butter, bittersweet chocolate, unsweetened chocolate, and vanilla. Beat on low speed until smooth and no patches of egg mixture show. Scrape down the mixing bowl often as the elements come together.
4. Resift the flour and cocoa mixture over the chocolate mixture and blend it in on low speed.
5. Remove the bowl from the mixer stand and stir in the chocolate chips. The batter will be soft and glossy. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it stand for 10 minutes.
6. Place 3-tablespoon mounds of dough onto the lined sheets, spacing the mounds about 3 inches apart, arranging 9 mounds to a sheet (do not crowd them).
7. Bake the cookies for 13 to 14 minutes or until they set. Begin checking them after 12 minutes. The baked cookies will be soft but stable, and the tops, when set, will no longer seem like wet batter. Let the cookies stand on the sheets for 1 minute. Then slide the parchment onto a wire rack and let the cookies cool completely on the paper. Use a wide metal spatula to remove them from the sheet and store in an airtight tin.
I never attacked people for speaking favorably of the movies. I just got angry with the constant praising of jackson. And everything else I said in the above post. People can like the movies - but when people don't see one single thing that Jackson has done wrong and just wants to excuse everything as "it was the only way to do it".
Oh... and any soft oatmeal raisin cookies? Pumpkin pie? My mother-in-law makes this wonderful pumpkin cream pie... top layer is like a pumpkin pie, but not totally set-up (more liquid consistency), the layer below is kind of a cream-cheesy / whipped cream thing - and it's all on a graham cracker crust... fattening to even look at!
Starting to feel like a dwarf visiting the hole of a well-to-do hobbit...
Here in Chicago it's been spotty... some years we have it at Christmas, some we don't. From what I'm hearing though, this year is supposed to be above average with snowfall. We can hope...:)
Valandil, I live in the southeastern part of the USA. It has snowed once here, to my recollection; that was 13 yrs ago and the stuff melted as soon as it hit the ground. I don't even consider that it really snowed.
Elvengirl, I am very sorry to say that I have to back out of my generious offer to give you the best deal here on snow. You have waited to long to make up your mind and therefore I will no longer be able to accommodate you. It's all melting. Maybe the next blizzard, huh?:D :D
Okay, that's out of the way. Pie makes me do that...;)
We had some snow last week, and my little Escort wagon got stuck. Agrr...but we did have a lovely two hour delay on Friday, which was nice, nice, nice. We're supposed to get some snow tomorrow, and a whole bunch of predictions were going around school as to whether we'll have late arrivals, early releases or no school at all. Tis nice banter amidst all the usual high school crap.
Elvengirl... too bad about your no-snow situation! Ever take northerly trips around Christmas? Say, anyone ever tell you your name is very similar to Elf Girl's??;) My 5-year-old was quite distressed to learn last night that it's possible to sometimes NOT have snow for Christmas.:eek:
Starr... hang in there! Wrapping up high school and sorting out what comes after is just a hard time. Years from now, you'll look back at it with fond memories... but going through it is an uncomfortably stretching experience. Like I said though, hang in there. Lean on close friends and family. Your family may be of more help than you might expect... EVEN your parents! :)
:( Thanks anyway SGH. Let me know when the next time will be. ;)
Valandil, last summer we went to Canada and we went up to the mountains to where there was some snow and I was able to play a liitle bit in it. That was the first time I ever was able to do anything in snow. I'd love to go up to a lodge somewhere and spend Christmas in the snow. We are thinking of doing that next year. :)
I see the price of snow has just skyrocketed because of lack of suppliers. I'm now selling snow for $100/square foot plus shipping of course. :D We have plenty of white stuff still left - but supplies are limited because it will be gone in a couple of days. Hurry while you can and don't take the muddy kind that others are trying to sell - this is 100% snow.
Hey - the death by chocolate is no fair. But thanks for the recipe - I can make it and over them too. :) Plus my snow is STILL better than yours. So there. :p I will however reduce the price to $55/square foot. Now do you want white snow like mine or brown and dingy snow like Elf Girl's?
Valandil: Yeah, I know I'll make it, but it just...ARG! That's about how well I can articulate myself anymore. My parents, and especially my mom, are a HUGE help, and even though she gets on my nerves sometimes, I'm lucky. I tend to be able to talk to her about a lot of things, and she's a tough lady, and I know if she could make it through what she did, I can definitely handle the trials I'm given. They aren't nearly as severe.
Just sitting here, looking around the place and imagining what it looks like... (if I may take the liberty to describe your tea shop, Nurvingiel:) )
One wall, of course, has a counter and display case, showing all the nice goodies to be had, and a pleasant person behind it to wait on us.
On another wall - I think a fireplace would be nice.
One wall has a passage to the washrooms... uh, I hope we don't just have one unisex type, so we don't have to wait in line after drinking all these caffinated drinks.
Some nice windows to the outside... where there's snow on the ground.
I'd kinda like to put some Christmas decorations in one corner - but don't want to squeeze out other holiday traditions... so do we have a sequence of rooms, or maybe an octagon-shaped room (so we get 8 corners!).
Now... anybody going to see any movies in the near future?;)
Elvengirl
12-12-2003, 11:28 AM
Where are the taodstools? ;)
I agree, this place could use some holiday decor. I'll help with the tree and we can put up decorations for any holiday, if wanted. :)
Now, I've just made some rice crispie treats, so they will be passed around if anyone wants some.
Movies....Besides ROTK, I'm going top see TTT EE in theaters, which I haven't seen yet, so I'm excited! :D
I want to see the Last Samurai. Has anyone seen it? I've heard good things about it.
Did you say there was snow outside?
I'll just be out there, if anyone needs me.....*runs out the door* :D
Nurvingiel
12-12-2003, 11:33 AM
I liked your description Valandil, especially the octagonal room! Four of the walls are windows, and the display case/counter are in front of the walls. Behind that is the kitchen, from which delicious baking smells waft.
Frequent customers are allowed to use the kitchen too, so Elvengirl's rice krispie squares are still hot.
We should put up a Christmas tree, and Kwanzaa and Hannukah decorations are welcome as well.
Movies:
I want to see RotK, the Last Samurai, and Master and Commander this Christmas.
Say, Nurvi... just a bit of Tea Room chatter... I saw where on the thread Azalea closed that you asked about Eomer's wedding to the daughter of Prince Imrahil. No need to look too far for that one - I think it's outlined in the appendices.
So... any good munchies around today?:)
Nurvingiel
I don't get to read LotR again until I get home (in two days), but I'll look at the appendecies then. :)
There's always good munchies around here! Today I'm making fried egg and onion sandwiches, with fried garlic and ketchup. It may sound gross to some, but it is delicious.
Nurvingiel's Enhanced Fried Egg Sandwich:
All you do is fry up thinly sliced onions, and coarsly chopped garlic. When they're almost done, add the egg beside them in the pan. (More efficient, and they'll all be done at the same time.)
In the meantime, "butter" 1 piece of fresh bread with ketchup. When the egg is cooked, put it and the fried garlic and onions onto the bread. Top it with another piece of bread to make it a sandwich obviously.
Tip: You may want to break the yolk in the pan to make the sandwich easier to eat.
Serve with: Soup, milk, and other tasty things.
For those of you who want to wuss out and not try it, here's a box of ginger snaps. ;)
*starts making a fried egg sandwich* So, who wants one?
Have made plans to see RotK in the very, VERY distant future (the 23RD!!!). Have been thinking of sneaking out to see it a little sooner first (don't think my friends will mind at all). The QUEEN of Arnor says that I can see it tonight, but have to wait until we have all the little princes settled in for the night. The little boogers don't stop kickin' at least until 9:00 pm, I'm prob at least a half-hour drive to a theater - so I'm looking at a 10:00 pm start. Lessee... 3:20 for the film - after previews, mad dash to the bathroom, drive home... figure I'm lucky to get in bed by 2:30 in the am.
The one little problem is that I generally get up for work at about 5:00 (but I CAN sleep in until about 6:00). It's Friday tomorrow, and I imagine I could go on adrenaline... what do you fellow Teacup Cafe-ers think of this absurd plan though...???:confused:
My dear Radagast, when I graduated I just managed to get 82% on English and that was my second best grade. To me 82% is something to be proud of. That's why I was so surprised you seemingly complained it wasn't good enough. It's a pity about the 60, tenses can be a bore. But the 100 on vocabulary is awesome. :) I don't think I ever had that much on vocabulary.
Oh no! Don't mention any spoilers, please. :eek: I haven't been visiting the movieforum for days now so I wouldn't read anything about RoTK before I've seen it. And that could take still a few days. Crud.
Hi everyone. *Pull up a chair* Just thought I'd drop by since I'm waiting patiently for the ROTK to open here (and I want to boost my post count :) ). I think I'd like lots of chocolate cookies and iced coffee (because it's hot here.) In one week exactly I'll be watching the ROTK. Pardon me while I die of impatience... :D
Welcome to the Moot Almie, are there any of those cookies left? :)
I've sure eaten a lot in this thread.
**Drinks third or fourth cup of tea**
I saw RotK yesterday (the 17th) and it was sooo good! I greatly enjoyed myself, and I'm glad I was forewarned about some of the more questionable changes.
You know the saying, "Promise low, deliver high" ? Well I had very low expectations, and RotK exceeded them fantastically. (That's a veiled compliment, in case anyone wonders.)
Oh - I over-heard that... no, didn't get out to see it, unfortunately. I was pretty tired anyway. Too little sleep the night before last.
I'm entertaining the same kind of thoughts about tonight, but realistically doubt it will work (much the same reason). So... maybe I'm gonna have to wait clear up to the 23rd!
Hey - my two older boys are in a Christmas play at church tonight. They're 5 and 3. The 5-year-old (he's a shepherd) has an established history of 'stage-fright' in these kinds of things - so we'll see how he does this time. The 3-year-old (a sheep) is making his first stage appearance. Our concerns about him are quite the opposite... he may ham it up and try to steal the show!:D He MIGHT even start running around the platform area and the rest of the sanctuary... *sigh* Always out of control, that one!:eek:
Advice: it's up to you. Some people have the whole movie spoiled for them if they know anything at all about the movie. I assume you've read the books so you know the story, but you are asking about specifically what PJ did to the story.. and should you be warned ahead of time.
For me, I read the spoilers. I'm waiting until probably this weekend or next week to see RotK... not sure. The spoilers sort of made my decision on whether I should wait out the crowds or rush to see it.
sorry, everyone :o - here's some napkins....
I saw ROTK last night and was pleasantly surprised - actually pretty good.
Val - I liked to know spoilers, because otherwise I just sit there all nervous and thinking "what will they foul up NEXT?!?!?" I'd rather KNOW what they fouled up, then I'm not so nervous about it and can enjoy the good parts. But that's me - you may be different.
I didn't want to see too many spoilers, (but curiosity got the best of me and I looked at a few, just a couple, anyway. :o) because I didn't want to have preconcieved idea at what the movie would be like. I would suggest not seeing any spoilers, that way you don't have any expectations.
*Comes in looking flushed and a teensy bit drunk with happiness* Ooh, I'm so happy. Today was the last day of school until next year. And I didn't have a single academic class all day cos we went ice skating and then watched the student-staff basketball game, and then watched the Flying Aces throw frisbees around our gym. It meant upwards of two hours sitting on the bleachers, but, eh, who cares, it's Christmas break. And I got to see all my friends right after school.
I'm preparing myself for the hard Christmas time, and all that food. ;) Luckily I (if I can still move after Christmas) train Taekwondo.
There was a race this morning so I had to get up around 6:30, but alarm clock went off around 5:00 :rolleyes:. I then ran 5K in 50 degree weather, very refreshing. ;)
Then there was several hours of Christmas shopping, followed by 3 1/2 hours of standing outside in a Winter Wonderland. My church sets up this Christmas event called Winter Wonderland, where they have shows, pony rides, Santa, etc. I was volunteering for that.
I took a karate class when I was in the second grade. The instructor told my mom that I had good technique but not enough power. I have no idea why I remember that.
Let's see... today I help my grandmother get out Christmas decorations. Then my mom picked me up and when I got home I did absolutely nothing until my sister's boyfriend came over. We decorated our tree on Thursday, and it was quite an "extended" family affair. My sister's fiance and my boyfriend were both there, mostly to help with the tall boy duties, since the majority of my household is small. The evening was great (even when my stepdad accused my boyfriend and I of not actually looking for decorations when we were...blarg...), but a bit ruined near the end of the evening because of a lovely family spat. :rolleyes: Ah, well.
We have a bit of a Charlie Brown tree...it's smaller than our past trees, and doesn't have any presents under it. I don't mind too much though. Christmas isn't all material things.
Nurvingiel
12-21-2003, 06:49 PM
We decorated our tree yesterday too! It looks cool. It's a Ukranian Christmas tree, so we have to give it Ginger Ale. "Wha..?" you say? Well allow me to explain.
Ukranian Christmas is later than Dec 25, but they put up their trees the same time as everyone else. To keep it looking nice for the longer period of time, they water it with something sweet rather than plain water. The tree uses sugar for 'tree maintenance', and stays looking fresh and green!
Now that we're all in the Christmas spirit, how about some Egg Nog with a little nutmeg sprinkled on top?
*sets down empty tea cup #4, and pours self a cup of egg nog*
Oh, it is an ordinary Christmas tree. We just got it from a Ukranian man who told us about the tradition. It's a Douglas-fir and doesn't have a strong smell. It's a very nice tree though, but not special apart from the Ginger Ale.
I did imply that it was somehow extraordinary. Oops! :D
12-21-2003, 07:16 PM
I thought you might have decorated it with Ukrainian decorations. All I remember about my grandparents' tree was that is was decorated with candles and baubles and ordinary Chrismassy things.
It's actually quite cold and windy and rainy here today, despite it being summer, so I might take a mug of eggnog, thank you.
Well... the boys did OK in the Christmas Program Friday night. The older one actually said his line (!!!) without hiding or running off-stage. The younger one generally stayed where he was supposed to be and didn't run all over the place and yell - as we feared he might.
We had a nice event at our church last night too. Door-to-door Christmas caroling isn't really permitted in Chicago. We had sort of an indoor caroling service... just all kinds of Christmas music. It was real nice. :)
My wife has taken care of most of the Christmas shopping - nice because my days are quite long with the commute. Tonight she wants me to run by a store to pick up a few accessories for the one big toy she got our boys to share (it's a castle - I'll be getting different characters that can go in it). I also plan to take the opportunity to actually get HER something. We just passed our 10th anniversary and life was real crazy at that time... I'm thinking some nice jewelry - but not entirely certain. Neither of us is really into it that much (at least I don't THINK she is), but maybe I'll do it anyway...
