The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are two published novels (LOTR usually split into 3 volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King) The Hobbit is LOTR's prequel
The Silmarillion is a collection of Tolkien's stories edited (and sometimes altered slightly) by his son, detailing the first age of middle earth and summarising the downfall of Numenor and LOTR. Unfinished Tales are a collection of Tolkien writings that serves as additional/background material to LOTR/Silmarillion HoME are the 12 books listed above that are the collected notes and stories of Tolkien up to his death (including 4 volumes detailing the writing of LOTR) that detail the evolution of the language and history and cultures of middle earth. Start with the Hobbit or perhaps the LOTR (you don't need to read the hobbit first, I didn't, and its style is very different from other works set in Middle Earth) The rest of the works will be enjoyable if you enjoy Lord of the Rings. However they are not finished flowing works, are complex, often obtuse and use difficult language. That said they are rewarding and beautiful and deep... Dive in and instead of trying to have all your questions answered-just read and enjoy the words.

Oh and HoME is set out in the order the material was written
The first 2 volumes were written 1917-1920 and are a primitive Silmarillion Next 3 written 1920=1937 detail the creation of Middle Earth LOTR 1937-mid 50s (4 Volumes) 2 more cover additions and alterations to the Silmarillion legends from mid 50s until his death The last is a volume about LOTR appendixes and include the first 4 pages of a never completed sequel to LOTR (Tolkien didn't like it)

There was supposed to be a sequel?
I don't care if he didnt like it...... I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!! No, but really, I've always wanted more..... The other books are okay, but they are more like encyclopedias....I want more stories, if you know what I mean. |

Definitely Foster's Complete Guide to Middle Earth. If you ever decide to tackled The Silmarillion (which I just completed), you will need it. So many characters, and each one has about five names. And the place names! But it's worth it!
