Britain's Best Sitcom
The BBC is doing another of its vox-pop "cultural" projects to decide which is Britain's best-ever sitcom. The final shortlist is:
Blackadder Dad's Army Fawlty Towers The Good Life One Foot in the Grave Only Fools and Horses Open All Hours Porridge The Vicar of Dibley Yes Minister Which are your favourites? Either Fawlty Towers or Only Fools and Horses have got to be most likely to win - and deservedly so - but personally I have a soft spot for the chaotic poignancy of Dad's Army and the fantastic scripts of Yes Minister. And Blackadder, of course. You can still vote; the winner will be decided on Saturday 27th http://www.bbc.co.uk/sitcom/

I have only seen Blackadder and Fawlty Towers. I just can't decide which of them I love the most.

And don't forget that touching, poignant special:
"Black Adder's Christmas Carol." Red Dwarf didn't make the cut?

As an American, I haven't had a chance to see all the nominated shows, but I have seen Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and the Vicar of Dibley. (Dad's Army and Open All Hours have played here, but I haven't seen them).
My favorite is The Vicar of Dibley. Closely followed by Fawlty Towers. A show that has been popular (in my neck of the woods, anyway) is Are You Being Served? And what about AbFab? It's good for a laugh every now and again. (pretty hit-or-miss, IMO, but I know folks who just love it...)

Blackadder - no argument. Though I am dissapointed that Father Ted never made the final cut.

Well, considering Father Ted isn't a British sitcom it makes sense not to have it there. 95% of British sitcoms are terrible, Bottom is great though.

Yeah... the problem was 'Only Fools and Horses' won. That was awful. Nothing besides Fawlty Towers and Blackadder could rival the best of the US. I mean Fraiser is out of that league. But nothing, NOTHING comes close to Seinfeld. No hugging, no learning.

'Only Fools and Horses' hasn't been shown in this area, so I can't comment directly on it. Perhaps they won the award by campaigning for it by following George Costanza's theory of "doing the opposite".

Wow. Leaving out Red Dwarf is almost criminal.

Anyone seen Spaced? It's pretty good too.
In what way is Father Ted a British sitcom? |

Of course Father Ted is British Sitcom, after all besides from the fact that it was written by Irish people, directed by Irish people, performed by Irish people and recorded in Ireland it's a completely 100% British piece of work.
By the way, whats up with the Only Fools and Horse bashing? It's a brilliant show. I can honestly say never I've watched an American sitcom that I've really found funny. I mean, all formats are the same. |
