lyrics thread ( not silly or trite)
How about posting some lyrics here
RULE 1: NOTHING SILLY OR TRITE aim for something artistic, unsual, or saying something of value if you know something about the background that might make it interesting that is ok too RULE 2 NAME THE ARTIST this way we can further are research of the artist RULE 3 ONE LYRIC PER POST RULE 4 NO HAPPY SAPPY SONGS I'll start wil one : Fotheringay [Sandy Denny] of fairport convention Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned at the castle of Fotheringay by Queen Elizabeth I for conspiring to overthrow Elizabeth. How often she has gazed from castle windows o'er, And watched the daylight passing within her captive wall, With no-one to heed her call. The evening hour is fading within the dwindling sun, And in a lonely moment those embers will be gone And the last of all the young birds flown. Her days of precious freedom, forfeited long before, To live such fruitless years behind a guarded door, But those days will last no more. Tomorrow at this hour she will be far away, Much farther than these islands, Or the lonely Fotheringay

Pink Floyd
Sorrow The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky: A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers, But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise He's chained forever to a world that's departed It's not enough, it's not enough His blood has frozen & curdled with fright His knees have trembled & given way in the night His hand has weakened at the moment of truth His step has faltered One world, one soul Time pass, the river rolls And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight And silence that speaks so much louder that words, Of promises broken

RUSH
losing it The dancer slows her frantic pace In pain and desperation, Her aching limbs and downcast face Aglow with perspiration Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire, With just the briefest pause --- The flooding through her memory, The echoes of old applause. She limps across the floor And closes her bedroom door... The writer stares with glassy eyes --- Defies the empty page His beard is white, his face is lined And streaked with tears of rage. Thirty years ago, how the words would flow With passion and precision, But now his mind is dark and dulled By sickness and indecision. And he stares out the kitchen door Where the sun will rise no more... Some are born to move the world --- To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we'd like to be Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you -- the blind who once could see --- The bell tolls for thee...

All things must pass, George Harrison. For obvious reasons.
Sunrise doesn't last all morning A cloudburst doesn't last all day Seems my love is up and has left you with no warning It's not always going to be this grey All things must pass All things must pass away Sunset doesn't last all evening A mind can blow those clouds away After all this, my love is up and must be leaving It's not always going to be this grey All things must pass All things must pass away All things must pass None of life's strings can last So, I must be on my way And face another day Now the darkness only stays the night-time In the morning it will fade away Daylight is good at arriving at the right time It's not always going to be this grey All things must pass All things must pass away All things must pass All things must pass away

This song to me is the best ever written, and i feel if certain gender's were changed it would be true to all of us, including myself!
Yesterday Wirter, lead vocal: Paul McCartney Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away Now it looks as though they're here to stay Oh, I believe in yesterday. Suddenly, I'm not half to man I used to be, There's a shadow hanging over me. Oh, yesterday came suddenly. Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say. I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday. Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play. Now I need a place to hide away. Oh, I believe in yesterday. Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say. I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday. Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play. Now I need a place to hide away. Oh, I believe in yesterday. Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm.

Think About Your Troubles by Harry Nilsson
Sit beside the breakfast table, think about your troubles,
Pour yourself a cup of tea, and think about the bubbles, You can take your teardrops and drop 'em in a teacup, Take 'em down to the riverside and throw 'em over the side To be swept up by a current, then taken to the ocean To be eaten by some fishes, who were eaten by some fishes And swallowed by a whale who grew so old He decomposed. He died and left his body to the bottom of the ocean Now everybody knows that when a body decomposes The basic elements are given back to the ocean And the sea does what it oughta And soon there's salty water, which is not to good for drinking 'Cuz it tastes just like a teardrop, so we run it through a filter And it comes out from a faucet, and it pours into a teapot Which is just about to bubble, now think about your troubles. (hope this wasn't to trite or anything, but I really love this song). |

TWO BEDS AND A COFFEE MACHINE- Savage Garden
And she takes another step Slowly she opens the door Check that he is sleeping Pick up all the broken glass and furniture on the floor Been up half the night screaming now it's time to get away Pack up the kids in the car Another bruise to try and hide Another alibi to write Another ditch in the road You keep moving Another stop sign You keep moving on And the years go by so fast Wonder how I ever made it through And there are children to think of Baby's asleep in the backseat Wonder how they'll ever make it through this living nightmare But the mind is an amazing thing Full of candy dreams and new toys and another cheap hotel Two beds and a coffee machine But there are groceries to buy And she knows she'll have to go home Another ditch in the road You keep moving Another stop sign You keep moving on And the years go by so fast Wonder how I ever made it through Another bruise to try and hide Another alibi to write Another lonely highway in the black of night But there's hope in the darkness You know you're going to make it Another ditch in the road Keep moving Another stop sign You keep moving on And the years go by so fast Silent fortress built to last Wonder how I ever made it It really made me think when i first heard it.

I habe never heard that savage garden one but then again i'm not a massive fan but this has got to be the most inspiring song ever:
Savage Garden, Affirmation I believe the sun should never set upon an argument I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality I believe that trust is more important than monogamy I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul I believe that family is worth more than money or gold I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed I believe that God does not endorse T.V evangelists I believe in love surviving death into eternity I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye *sniff*

I protest to having to delete this song.
This thread is about LYRICS not the people whose agents they got mailed to.

Every Time It Rains
Every time it rains it rains pennies from heaven Don'tcha know each cloud contains, oh Pennies from heaven You'll find your fortune falling All over town Make sure that your umbrella Is upside down Trade them for a packacke of sunshine and flowers If you want the things you love You must have showers So when you hear it thunder Don't run under a tree There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me. Just one of those feel-good songs, I guess. I think Bing Crosby sang it.

I love that one, GG!
I love this song and I think it will be on my top 5 list for a long, long time. TIME OF YOUR LIFE by Green Day (I don't have the lyrics right in front of me, I'm doing it from memory so bear with me) Another turn around, a fork stuck in the road Tom grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go So make the best of this task, and don't ask why It's not a question but a lesson learned in time It's something unpredictable, but in the end there's right I hope you had the time of your life So take the photographs and steal friends in your mind Hangin' on a shelf in good health and good time Tatoos and memories and askin' on trial For what it's worth, it was worth all the while It's something unpredictable, but in the end there's right I hope you had the time of your life [break] It's something unpredictable, (etc.)

Only A Pawn In Their Game
by Bob Dylan *Medgar Evers was a civil rights activist murdered in 1963. His murderer was not found guilty until almost 30 years later.* A bullet from the back of a bush took Medgar Evers' blood. A finger fired the trigger to his name. A handle hid out in the dark A hand set the spark Two eyes took the aim Behind a man's brain But he can't be blamed He's only a pawn in their game. A South politician preaches to the poor white man, "You got more than the blacks, don't complain. You're better than them, you been born with white skin," they explain. And the Negro's name Is used it is plain For the politician's gain As he rises to fame And the poor white remains On the caboose of the train But it ain't him to blame He's only a pawn in their game. The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid, And the marshals and cops get the same, But the poor white man's used in the hands of them all like a tool. He's taught in his school From the start by the rule That the laws are with him To protect his white skin To keep up his hate So he never thinks straight 'Bout the shape that he's in But it ain't him to blame He's only a pawn in their game. From the poverty shacks, he looks from the cracks to the tracks, And the hoof beats pound in his brain. And he's taught how to walk in a pack Shoot in the back With his fist in a clinch To hang and to lynch To hide 'neath the hood To kill with no pain Like a dog on a chain He ain't got no name But it ain't him to blame He's only a pawn in their game. Today, Medgar Evers was buried from the bullet he caught. They lowered him down as a king. But when the shadowy sun sets on the one That fired the gun He'll see by his grave On the stone that remains Carved next to his name His epitaph plain: Only a pawn in their game.

Ooh, I LOVE Bob Dylan!! Here's one called Hurricane, based on the wrongful imprisonment of the boxer, Rubin Carter (played by Denzel Washington in "Hurricane".)
HURRICANE. Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall. She sees the bartender in a pool of blood, Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!" Here comes the story of the Hurricane, The man the authorities came to blame For somethin' that he never done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world. Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously. "I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands "I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand. I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops "One of us had better call up the cops." And so Patty calls the cops And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin' In the hot New Jersey night. Meanwhile, far away in another part of town Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around. Number one contender for the middleweight crown Had no idea what kinda **** was about to go down When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road Just like the time before and the time before that. In Paterson that's just the way things go. If you're black you might as well not show up on the street 'Less you wanna draw the heat. Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops. Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like middleweights They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates." And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head. Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead" So they took him to the infirmary And though this man could hardly see They told him that he could identify the guilty men. Four in the mornin' and they haul Rubin in, Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs. The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!" Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane, The man the authorities came to blame For somethin' that he never done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world. Four months later, the ghettos are in flame, Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody to blame. "Remember that murder that happened in a bar?" "Remember you said you saw the getaway car?" "You think you'd like to play ball with the law?" "Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that night?" "Don't forget that you are white." Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure." Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Bello Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow. You'll be doin' society a favor. That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver. We want to put his ass in stir We want to pin this triple murder on him He ain't no Gentleman Jim." Rubin could take a man out with just one punch But he never did like to talk about it all that much. It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way Up to some paradise Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice And ride a horse along a trail. But then they took him to the jail house Where they try to turn a man into a mouse. All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance. The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger. No one doubted that he pulled the trigger. And though they could not produce the gun, The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed And the all-white jury agreed. Rubin Carter was falsely tried. The crime was murder "one," guess who testified? Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride. How can the life of such a man Be in the palm of some fool's hand? To see him obviously framed Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land Where justice is a game. Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell An innocent man in a living hell. That's the story of the Hurricane, But it won't be over till they clear his name And give him back the time he's done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world.

One of my favorite songs is a Christmas song by Simon and Garfunkel. It's called 7 o'clock News/Silent Night. Broadcast is from the sixties.
Silent night, holy night All is calm all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Slee in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace (continues to play over broadcast) This is the early evening edition of the news. The recent fight in the House of Representatives was over the open housing section of the Civil Rights bill. Brought traditional enemies together but it left the defenders of the measure without the votes of their strongest supporters. President Johnson originally proplesed an outright ban covering discrimination by everyone for every type of housing but it had no chance from the start and everyone in Congress knew it. A compromise was painfully worked out in the House Judiciary Committee. In Los Angeles today comedian Lenny Bruce died of what was believed to ben an overdose of narcotics. Bruce was 42 years old. Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for an open housing march Sunday into the Chicago suburbs of Cicero. Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march and the police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out if it is held. King now in Atlanta, Georgia plans to return to Chicago by Tuesday. In Chicago Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was bought before a grand jury today for indictment. The nurses wree found stabbed and strangled in their Chicago apartments. In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a sp ecial subcommittee of the House Committee on Un-American activities continued its probe into anti-Vietnam war protest. Demonstraters were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting anti-war slogans. Former Vice President Richard Nixon says that unless there is substantial increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, te U.S. shoud look foward to five more years of war. In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York, Nixon also said opposition to the war in this contry is the greatest single weapon working against the U.S. That's the 7o'clock edition of the news. Goodnight. It's a really intresting song to listen too, and it's cool for me because my parents were alive and remember about all that stuff and my dad fought in Vietnam.

World Leader Pretend by R.E.M. ( Green CD)
I sit at my table and wage war on myself It seems like its all for nothing I know the barricades, and I know the mortar in the wall breaks I recognize the weapons. I've used them well. I've a rich understanding of my finest defences: I proclaim that claims are left unstated, I demand a rematch. I decree a stalmate. I divine my deeper motives. I recognize the weapons. I've practiced them well, I fitted them myself. Its amazing what devices you can sympathize, empathize. This is my mistake. Let me make it good. I raised the wall and I will be the one to knock it down. Reach out for me, hold me tight, hold that memory. Let my machine talk to me. Let my machine talk to me. This is my world, and I am world leader pretend. This is my life, and this is my time. I have been given the freedom to do as I see fit. Its high time I raised the walls that I've constructed. Its amazing what devices you can sympathize, empathize. This is my mistake, let me make it good. I raised the wall and I will be the one to knock it down. You fill in the mortar. You fill in the harmony. You fill in the mortar. You fill in the harmony. I raised the wall and I will be the one to knock it down.

Pink Floyd -- Wish You Were Here
So So you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, Blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail, A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees, hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for chains, Did you exchange a walk-on part in a war for a lead role in a cage? How I wish How I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimmin' in a fish bowl year after year, runnin' over the same old ground, what have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here. Another song that inspires me is, John Lennon's "Woman is the Nigger of the World."
Woman is the nigger of the world Yes she is... think about it Woman is the nigger of the world Think about it... do something about it We make her paint her face and dance If she won't be a slave, we say that she don't love us If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man While putting her down we pretend that she's above us Woman is the nigger of the world.. yes she is If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave of the slaves Ah, yeh... better scream about it We make her bear and raise our children And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen We tell her home is the only place she should be Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend Woman is the nigger of the world... yes she is If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave to the slaves Yeh (think about it) We insult her every day on TV And wonder why she has no guts or confidence When she's young, we kill her will to be free While telling her not to be so smart We put her down for being so dumb Woman is the nigger of the world Yes she is... If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave to the slaves Yes, she is... If you believe me, you better scream about it We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance

Here is a great one, by my favorite entertainer!
FAMILY SNAPSHOT by Peter Gabriel
The streets are lined with camera crews Everywhere he goes is news Today is different Today is not the same Today I make the action Take snapshot into the light, snapshot into the light I'm shooting into the light Four miles down the cavalcade moves on Driving into the sun If I worked it out right They won't see me or the gun Two miles to go, they're clearing the road The cheering has really begun I've got my radio I can hear what's going on I've been waiting for this I've been waiting for this All you people in TV land I will wake up your empty shells Peak-time viewing blown in a flash As I burn into your memory cells 'Cos I'm alive They're coming 'round the corner with the bikers at the front I'm wiping the sweat from my eyes -It's a matter of time -It's a matter of will And the governor's car is not far behind He's not the one I've got in mind 'Cos there he is-the man of the hour, standing in the limousine "I don't really hate you -I don't care what you do We were made for each other -Me and you I want to be somebody You were like that too. If you don't get given you learn to take And I will take you." Holding my breath Release the catch And I let the bullet fly All turned quiet - I have been here before Lonely boy hiding behind the front door Friends have all gone home There's my toy gun on the floor Come back Mum and Dad You're growing apart You know that I'm growing up sad I need some attention I shoot into the light

David Bowie's "Quicksand"... It's political!
I'm closer to the Golden Dawn Immersed in Crowley's uniform Of imagery I'm living in a silent film Portraying Himmler's secret realm Of dream reality I'm frightened by the total goal I'm drawing to the ragged hole And I ain't got the power anymore No I ain't got the power anymore I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes I'm living proof of Churchill's lies I'm destiny I'm drawn between the light and dark Where others see their targets Divine symmetry Should I kiss the viper's fang Or herald loud the death of Man I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought And I ain't got the power anymore Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release I'm not a prophet or a stone age man Just a mortal with potential of a superman I'm living on I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien Can't take my eyes from the great salvation Of bullshit faith If I don't explain what you ought to know You can tell me all about it On the next Bardo I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought And I ain't got the power anymore.
