Influx of Spam
Does anyone know why there's been such a drastic influx of spam lately? It's getting ridiculous...

I wouldn't say drastic, though. It's been like this for over a year. Everyday at least a few spam-posts get deleted. I just spent the last three nights sifting through a year's worth of over 1000 registered spammers and wiping them all out. (And cackling madly while deleting them, of course.) And I've only halved the present amount so far.

hm...maybe there were just a few that i actually saw before being deleted than, because i've seen a bunch lately, especially yesterday, which is why i posted this.

Ooh, I haven't seen a spammer in days now!
I installed an add-on to the software, and now all would-be registrants must correctly identify Frodo's last name before they can sign up. Guess the spambots aren't well-versed in literature

Well, I just entered all the conceivable misspellings as valid answers, so that should clear things up

Are you sure you want to do that? We could have upgraded the level of spelling around here at the same time...
And I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth...

On another forum that I frequent, they are seriously discussing the idea to put a 25 questions quiz for those who wish to register - with questions like: "The meaning of the name Feanor". "Was Sauron capable to assume physical form at the time of LOTR?" etc. And a time-limit to answer the quiz: 8 min. I guess it will dramatically reduce the number of newbies. |

Questions about Feanor's name would limit the newbies only to those who have read the silmarillion. For a silmarillion forum, that would make sense, but not for one with broader tolkien forums.
Could be fun though, having a whole question form to go through to register, but I think it's only for the die-hards of fans.

Yup lots of spam. I log on after a long absence and find an advertisement for buddhism in my PM inbox. I can't find the guy on the memberlist so apparently he was already booted for spam.

Yes, nice seeing you again, Huorn.
But wait, you've got spam mail in your entmoot inbox? I don't think any of them have done that before.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the administrative bulletin we received a couple months ago. The one about the server re-allocation?
I'm not much of a techie though. Earniel, Hobbit, Ben (if you're around)... do any of you guys know anything about it?
