Gandalf and Aragorn Relation
Everyone here probably knows this already, but it only just reccently accured to me for some odd reason.
Gandalf and Aragorn are distantly related as well. Aragorn is descended from Melian, distantly, and all the Ainur are essentialy siblings or something similiar..so that makes Gandalf Aragorns many thousands of times great uncle...or something. Kind of scary. |

Really? Where did you find that? That's kinda scary. Then wouldn't Aragorn be able to do a little bit of magic? Even if it would be just pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

Well, plus a lot of the characteristics (nobility, long life) I think can be attributed to that Maiar blood in the veins to some extent, in addition to the elf blood.

What it shows more is that his son Eldarion was the crossing point for all and that he was not only the High King of Elves and Men in Middle-earth through bloodlines, as he consisted from all the major houses of the Edain and Elder, but he was indeed more than just that with Maiar in him as well...

I often enjoy freaking people out with the interrelations between people in LoTR such as galadriel being Elrond's mother in law and Aragorn grandmother in law, and the fact that Aragorn was raised by Elrond who is actualy his several hundred times great uncle.
Thats the complication of all thease mortal/immortal marriages and whatall. And yes in Tolkien terms Aragorn does have magic...the healing hands and the mentions of his almost supernatural will and charisma being the most obvious. |

Fimbrethil - If you look in the back of the Silmarillion at the family trees, you'll see one that says something like "The House of Elwë". You'll find Melian the Maia on there.
Merlion - I love doing that too! I'll go "Hey, did you know that Aragorn and Arwen are related before they got married?" And then they freak out and I start listing all the other pairs of couples that are related and rattle off names to show off.

And if you really want to floor someone you can go into the whole Tom Bombadil discussion. He seems to be one of the only people in middle earth who ISNT oddly related to anyone

Would this be the appropriate thread to ask about Gandalf's parents? It is this thread that put the thought in my head in the first place.
Are you saying Gandalf's mother is Melian the Maia? Who is his father? Or does it even work like that with Maia?

As far as I know, the Valar and Maiar are parentless (not counting Eru), but they can have offspring, as in the case of Melian the Maia. So Gandalf has no parents.

If Gandalf and Aragorn is related due to their maiar blood, then Gandalf must be related to Saruman and the other wizards as well.
Hey, Gandalf would even be related to Sauron, since Sauron is a maia too

And ole' Cuz Balrog.
As for Aragorn, I would say that that is rather because he is a throwback to Numenor.
