Elf hair
"Fin" means hair in Quenya, so why did so many elves have fin in their name? (Glorfindel, Finrod, Fingolfin, etc.)

In some cultures (mostly dead), hair or rather the length of it, represented status. The ancient Greeks, for example, would chop the hair from a fallen member of the royal family and turn them out as a commoner. I don't believe the elves would be that superficial or forgiving towards treachery, but it's something to chew on...besides your hair, of course!

I am not real learned in the languages of Tolkien, but Just from my love of Finrod, I know that his name meant: "hair eminent one" Also, I read some where that it meant: "mighty descendant of Finwe." I don't think though that it was a reference to the golden color which I thought was rare among the Noldor but not the Vanyar. I don't picture Fingolfin or Fingon to have golden hair.

I can imagine myself playing a harp with the strands of a female Elf's hair.
