Book of Lost Tales

Am just starting to read Unfinished Tales. The general consensus on the board is to read UT, then Book of Lost Tales 1&2. They are the first 2 volumes of the History of Middle-earth. Are the BoLT as confusing as Return of the Shadow(vol. 6)? Tried to read that a while ago and just got muddled up in all the different versions of Bilbo's Party.

They are in fact quite confusing, but worth your time nonetheless. The Unfinished Tales were easier, however.

I read the book of lost tales a while ago and they are very confusing largely because they bear no resemblance to ME.

Oh, markedel, your answer is at least misleading!

The Book of Lost Tales is were Middle-Earth started from.

But, to answer the question: No, The Book of Lost Tales is not so confusing as is The Return of the Shadow. At least not for me when I readed them for the first time. In the later their are several versions rewritten and reshaped of one and the same story. In The Book of Lost Tales thier is only one very old and very diferent version of the story told in The Silmarillion.

Hope that helps
