Gandalf comes from Valinor. He is a Maia of Manwe the head Vala. Gandalf's name in Valinor was Olorin

In order to confuse congressmn, I will say that Gandalf came from the Timeless Halls of Eru. Additionally, I will say that Gandalf came from a part of Ilúvatar's mind. Yay!

Well, in the Silmarillon it points out that all of the Valar and Maiar (collective term = Ainur) came originally from Eru Illuvatar.

I will add that Saruman, Radagast and the Blue Wizards came from the same origins.

He was "born" before the world was created, so there is no real way to say how old he is.

I always thought it was the Valar that were actually directly created by Iluvatar. And that when they "sang" their music created other spirits such as the maiar. Am I off base here?

I believe that all the Ainur were created together, but I'm not sure.

Gandalf is an Istari. Istari is the order of Wizards, the Maiar who came to Middle-Earth a thousand years after the beginning of the Third age. There are five known Istari. They are Olórin (Gandalf), Curumo (Saruman), Radagast, Alatar and Pallando.

A funny thing about the Wizard is that they all have colours associated to them.
We have Gandalf the grey, Saruman the white, Radagast the brown and Alatar and Pallando, the blue wizards.

He is older than Middle-Earth. He's been in Aman for a LOOOOONG time, no doubt. He's been in Middle-Earth for about 2000 years.
