Imagine
Imagine
John Lennon Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today... Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one |

Good song, but a pipe dream. Communism works on paper as well!

So does Democracy - but should we not keep pursuing it, despite not having worked yet?
It may not be feasible here and now, but may still be a goal to strive for.

Anything worthwile should be strived for ...agreed. We should also make the most of what we have. The world can never be perfect, (that describes Heaven). I do think this recent tragedy
will cause a more unified America...blacks, whites, hispanics will possibly put aside there differences, and become one people! LET'S HOPE IT LASTS! Sorry if this is off topic.

Tuesday something happened that was utterly unimaginable. But it happened and as all of us found out the next day, it wasn't a dream. Lennon is saying imagine a world at peace, just imagine it! It seems to me that it is much simpler to imagine world peace then to imagine the horror of Tuesday.

I would rather live in a world of hell, then a peaceful world with no heaven.

I think that I agree with that one. If you live in a world of hell with a heaven, at least you have something to look forward too. Although if it were a world of hell, then it must mean that many people are bad and heavy sinners. Hence, most people will probably not end up in hell. So perhaps both of these worlds are equally undesirable.

That's right! Democracy is not an end, it's a process. It's not so much moving forward as keeping from sliding backwards. Like in Through the Looking-Glass : You have to go as fast as you can just to stay in the same place. As for the comment: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Sakata I would rather live in a world of hell, then a peaceful world with no heaven. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I agree, but...since we'll never get a peaceful world (blame it on human nature)...better a world with shades of hell but heaven afterwards.

If there's no heaven, there's no hell, something cannot exist without its opposite. It's an impossiblity, all of the ideas are that are represented in Imagine, but it's great to dream about

Incidentally, a few days ago (I didn't see this thread here until today) I posted a thread just like this at the JC.

I think that world peace is good, but a better goal is justice. Peace can result from that, but not necessarily vice versa. That world sounds too muck like A Brave New World for my taste.

"justice" is a double edged sword
i think it's all in the eye of the beholder. everyone has a different belief or perception of "heaven", and with that a different percetion of justice.
Look at it this way: The ppl who hijacked those planes felt totally justified in doing that. They beleived they were headed straight for the arms of their god. We americans think they all went to hell. We think we'll be serving justice when nwe prosecute and eliminate the ppl responsible, but those taht support them will probably think we're horrible monsters. "Imagine"is right. if this wasn't a world seperated by culture, religion, language, etc, there would be peace. but where's the fun in that? |

But aren't you all "separatists" in your own way then? Each part of a certain group of religion, political way of thinking... etc. There you condemn such ideals as communism, and at the same time saying "all should be one, hope there was no religion, different cultures or languages." Is the American way the only way?
Would YOU be ready to give up your ideals, your culture and your mother tongue for something else?

Of course not, but Imagine doesn't ask that. It's simply a scenario of what ifs, namely what if these things never excisted in the first place.
