This will be interesting.
[edit] Hey, the asteroid is going to fly by on April 13th. That's a Friday! Are they sure it won't hit us?

Well, that extra information is consoling. That'll be some birthday present for my 74 birthday EXACTLY...if I am graced to live that long! Either way I'll be looking...either up or down!

this is how AOL covers the news:
Massive Asteroid Careers Towards Earth Armageddon: Well, not this time, but the giant space rock will miss by a cosmic whisker A giant asteroid is speeding towards the Earth, space scientists said today. The massive rock, almost a quarter of a mile wide, was on a one-chance-in-60 collision course with the planet – though most observers now believe the odds to be a fraction of this. However, the space rock will come so close that it will pass between the Earth and orbiting telecommunications satellites – and, at 22,600 miles, will be the nearest miss in recorded history. It will also be visible with the naked eye from the UK mainland. If the asteroid were to hit Earth, the resulting explosion would be the equivalent to a direct strike with 20 hydrogen bombs. Vast areas of the planet would be transformed into wasteland, or, if it hit the ocean, a giant tsunami would be generated. Professor Mark Bailey, director of the Armagh Observatory, said: “I think everyone is saying that it is going to miss, though you will be able to see it with a small telescope or even the naked eye. “It is like being on a train station platform and watching an express train go by three feet away. “You’re close but it’s not dangerous.” The asteroid, called MN4, will skim Earth on Friday, April 13 2029. |

Man they are really playing it up arent they. I remember when this made news back in December. In just a day or two they came out and said on second thought its not nearly as scary as we thought. That the chances of an impact were next to nothing (originally they had said 60 to 1). Frankly I think it would do us (our species) some good to have our collective pants scared off us by witnessing a white hot rock streaking well under the atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles an hour. Maybe wed actually wake up and realize whats important in life...

I say we put the ... bugger ... into earth orbit by attaching some pusher drives to it now.
Then we can mine all our metal in space and quit strip mining the planet....

Dude... do you realize how FAST asteroids move? We're not talking a few hundred MPH. Those things are... like... a few hundred HUNDRED mph!!!! I think. I mean I've never actually tried to catch one and give it a speeding ticket because, hey, they just move too fast! |
