In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.'

'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

Edit! Edit! It's not too late!

Well Hector, what do you want to talk about? Say our favourite characters and talk about them? Propose some excellent quotes? Discuss a certain plot point?

leyts talk about our fav characters.

aragorn: he is so wise, and smart, and he is a warrior.
frodo: heroic for his size, self sacrficing.
faramir: just plain cool.
gandalf: because you cant help but like him...

its hard to say who's my overall fav.

i'd also like to discuss small little things in lotr. like the fox that sees the hobbits sleeping under a tree.
or the mysterious being who frodo sees as they leave on the ferry...

Sam is my favorite character. It always seems I care more about the trio on their quest than about all the non-hobbits and their battles. And as the quest unfolds, it all comes down to Sam. And I can relate to him so well, having so many family concerns of my own and wanting mostly just to be with them and not to have to trudge through another day. The same thing keeps us going.

That's Khamul, the only 'named' Nazgul. See UT, "The Hunt for the Ring"

Well, the Prince of Dol Amroth was important not just as a warrior, but also politically, in effect the regent of Gondor until Faramir recovered. And his daughter Lothiriel's marriage to Eomer, was, as was Eowyn and Faramir's, significant in keeping the Rohan/Gondor alliance strong. Also, he personally helped defend Minas Titrith even though his "fief" was under strong attack, realizing the importance of defending the city.

Quote:
Aragorn and Eomer and Imrahil rode back towards the Gate of the City, and they were now weary beyond joy or sorrow. These three were unscathed, for such was their fortune and the skill and might of their arms, and few indeed had dared to abide them or look on their faces in the hour of their wrath.
Quote:
"That is a fair lord and a great captain of men," said Legolas. "If Gondor has such men still in these days of fading, great must have been its glory in the days of its rising."

What the Books Forum needs is a good grenade thread. My current list of Grenades (AKA Topics to Avoid on Tolkien Forums)
1. Did Balrogs have wings? Could they talk?
2. Was Gollum a Hobbit/Stoor?
3. Were Uruk-Hai to be found only in Saruman's army?
4. What were the origins of Orcs? Dragons? Trolls?
6. Did Elves have pointed ears?
7. Was Tom Bombadil a Maia? How about Ungoliant?

and for the Silmarillion Forum:
7. Was Fëanoro good or evil?

Nazgul A couple more grenades for the belt

How about:
1. Did the Elves and Dwarves dislike each other?
2. Did the Nazgul trash the hobbits' room at the Pony?
3. Was Gil-Galad Fingon's son or Orodreth's?

and maybe the all-time best:

4. Precisely which works are to be considered 'canon'?

That's interesting about Eomer's wedding. Is that in Unfinished Tales? I have yet to read that.

There is something in the works to get the discussion flowing again here (although we have had spurts of good discussion recently, it does seem to be pretty slow most of the time), but it is on the back burner right now because people are busy. But when the holidays are over, I hope to proceed (maybe even sooner). I'll give more info at that time.

I'm actually going to close this thread, because really the way to revive discussion here is to a) reply to an interesting existing thread so as to bring it to the top to stimulate discussion on that topic or b) create a thread about a specific discussion topic that hasn't been discussed recently (a lot of the topics mentioned here already have threads that are considered "active" by the six month standard, otherwise people can start threads with the title stating a SPECIFIC topic of discussion -- this one is just too general. Just be sure to do a quick search first just in case).
