Would Spielberg have done a good job directing a SW film?
Any particularly strong opinions on this subject?
I know that at one point, he was a serious candidate to direct one or more of the films. Somehow it didnt work out.

Perhaps he could have improved what happened with Episodes I & II. (I still have not seen Ep.3 so I have no comment on that film) Episodes 4 & 5 were very good so it would be more challenging to try and improve these episodes. Although a good director can help improve a movie, there is not much a director can do if the story is weak, not well written, and the movie has poor acting performances from the actors.

I actually don't think so, because of what Star Wars was. It's a gigantic mythic masterpiece, something very unlike Spielberg films. Think about it: Spielberg's films concentrate on telling a powerful story, like ET for example.
George Lucas created a gigantic universe out of his own head, something that was absolutely huge. No way you'd get that from Spielberg. He just doesn't do the whole epic story thing.

Sorry, disagree with ya there, C.
Whilst I have been disenfranchised with some of his later work (shindler's list onward until very recently), I do acknowledge that he is a powerful storyteller, and can pull off some great blockbusters (Indiana Jones... anyone?). I think he could have done a much better job with the new trilogy than Lucas, who, lets face it, can be a sentimental git. There's a reason why Harrison Ford refused to do sappy lines with Carrie Fisher's character. If only there'd been that force (hehe) in play with the new trilogy (with particular regards to ep III... ugh). POSTSCRIPT: And there wasn't anything particularly mythic about the new trilogy. Midichlorians?! *smacks GL upside the head* WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!

I think I agree with BoP...Spielberg would have brought brevity to the prequels. Lucas was a little too accepting of cheesy scenes...
On the other hand, it's hard to think of Spielberg, with all those films under his belt, directing a SW movie.
