Anyone else dissapointed that this friendship did not appear in the movie, i thought it was a really interesting pair, they werent even showed in the same scene at all!

I was disappointed by many of the little interesting things taken out of the movie, and the added part of Liv Tyler, but we can't have everything in life.

It would have been cool to hear Bilbo say that poem he wrote about Aragorn. I love that poem. I liked it better with Bilbo standing up for Araforn rather than Legolas. No offense to Legolas lovers though.

I didn't notice the lack of their friendship, but now that you mention it, I do miss it.

Bilbo's poem and the letter in Bree
I also think it wasn't necessary to make Legolas the one to stand up for Aragorn, but Legolas is cool.
Bilbo's poem about Aragorn was also in the letter Gandalf wrote to Frodo that Barliman Butterbur forgot to mail. That letter was given to Frodo at the Prancing Pony. I don't think that letter should have been omitted because it explained why the hobbits went off with 'Strider'. In the book, they trusted him because they knew he was a friend of Gandalf's. And Bilbo's poem kicked. |

Ya I agree . it also shows the real character of Barliman. And the friendship of Gandalf to him.( I know that really makes no sense at all, but I have a bad headach right now and I am not thinking clearly)

That actually is my major gripe w/ the movie. I don't care that much about Liv's part, I was expecting it, but I don't like the way the hobbits took off after aragorn w/ out any proof that he was on the right side. (The only line that bugged me in that movie was "We have to trust him sam, we have no choice." )
*mutters* Did TOO have a choice...

He walked alone and sorrowing. He peered between the hemlock-leaves And saw in wonder flowers of gold Upon her mantle and her sleeves, And her hair like shadow following. He sought her ever, wandering far Where leaves or years were thickly strewn, By light of moon and ray of star In frosty heavens shivering. Her mantle glinted in the moon. And on a hill-top high and far She danced, and at her feet was strewn A mist of silver quivering. |

I agree I mean you ALWAYS have a choice why make a discision (SP) based on nothing? If the story had the letter it would have made alot more sense to non-tolkienites. My cousin told me the frodo was stupid for going with strider based on nothing more than a guess and overall feeling when i saw it with her in theatres

I also didn't like it how PJ scare-i-fied Bree, and turned it into a dark and sinister place. Did he absolutely HAVE to do that?!

Well, let's see: Strider knew what the Ring was and didn't try to take it, he knew that they were to meet with Gandalf (implying that he knew Gandalf), he knew all about the Ringwraiths, he saved Frodo and co.'s lives from the Black Riders (the way the scene is shot clearly implies that it was Strider's idea to trick the BR's with pillows under the sheets). The Hobbits didn't know where to go next and they needed someone to protect them from the BR's.
Given what Strider knew and did and the almost hopeless situation the Hobbits found themselves in (no where to go, no one to confide in, no protection from the Nazgul) it wasn't unreasonable to take a risk on Strider. In fact, in the book Frodo said he would have trusted Strider even if the letter hadn't shown up. Of course I agree that it played out quite fast in the movie and still think they should have put the letter in. But I can live without it.
