John Peel is dead!
This won't mean much to anyone outside Britain or who buys McFly singles, but I've just found out that John Peel has died today. The guy who gave air time to glam rock, punk, reggae, death metal, britpop etc way before anyone else had even heard of them. He seemed a genuinely nice bloke too.

I din't know much about him but I heard a tribute to him on Radio 5 Live and he sounded like a great guy.

Yeah, I heard he was the one who "discovered" The Datsuns, an nz band that is currently quite successful. RIP.

Heh. You've reminded me that I got his biog for my birthday and still haven't read it.
Peel was a giant. So many bands owe him for making it a mission to broaden our minds. More hilariously, Mark E Smith (out of The Fall, his favourite band) was interviewed on telly the day he died and gave one of the most surreal and bizarre interviews ever. |
