Political Compass and Political Discussion Thread

This is an interesting quiz:

http://www.politicalcompass.org

My score: -10, -8.15

I'm just curious to see where other people are, and curious to what they have to say about the questions...

You can't possibly hold the positions you do about centralized government with that place on the grid. This indicates to me that the test is badly designed.

Ah, but I could.

As my support of centralized government comes from my Marxism, centralized government is only a means to an end...

The end being what? Chaos? You can't centralize government unless the people running it are smarter than the people we have.

The environment, for example. People like to complain that their representatives aren't green enough, and if they were electing people at large, there'd be green ones. But areas with depressed economies compete for the right to install landfills. With a system of at large delegates we have no reason at ALL not to dump anything and everything in the Black Hills. No one needs that vote to pass a spending bill.

You make good points, but as my brain feels like an omelet today, and my body feels as if someone has put it through a clothes-wringer, I'll leave off my reply until later.

Let me just make the quick point that it is because of centralized government that school segregation (via Brown v. Board of Education (1954)) is illegal, and because of DE-centralized government that they're teaching Creationism (or were) in biology classes in Kansas.

There are pros and cons to everything...

Deeper than that, my brain's not letting me go today.

I'll let you off the hook today. But, fair warning, if you want to debate education policy, I'll never, ever stop. It's not my most attractive side.

Well, as I freely admit that's not my strongest suit, I won't go there.

That's me.

Some of those questions were genuinely asinine! How am I supposed to choose between the importance of Bussinessmen and Artists?

So I did the right thing. I am of the artistic inclination, and I chose bussiness.

However, there were many instances were I felt that the statement was incomplete, or that I felt this way IF or WHEN this and that.
I wonder if I can use this knowledge in my politics class...

Not sure about your school, but if you walked into a class I was teaching with info based on a facebook application, you'd be fortunate if all I did was shower you in hatching eggs.

No no, I meant knowing where I was supposed to be on the scales. I never did understand the difference between left and right, so perhaps it'll help remembering. But then again I have trouble understanding the difference between conservatives and liberalists too.

But if I could get someone to shower me with hatching eggs that have cute kitties in them just by walking into a class with FB info, I think I might try that KITTIES! Yay!

-4.62 to the Left, and -1.54 to the Lib.

Whoa! WAY more left-leaning than I expected. I guess they put more emphasis on economic and international questions than on moral and religious ones.

*waves to Mari* we seem to be in the same general neighbourhood.

*waves back* Yes, it was fairly moderate on religious questions. A lot of emphasis on multinationals and their behaviour though.

I was surprised as to how "almost in the middle" my point was. I was expecting to be lumped with Hitler.
