Interesting find. I wonder if they could turn to crowdfunding to pay for a full excavation and relocation.
That said I cannot think of a mosaic floor in good condition without thinking of the site of Zeugma in Turkey of which only a few mosaics were saved and most of the site now forever lost to a waterpower plant. |

I don't know what the UK finances are like, but I would think they could come up with the funds for something like this. And if not the nation as a whole - maybe the Royals?

The Royals doing it would get political I guess.
Besides it seems the main thing is just at the moment Mr Irwin rather prefers his lawn unspoilt. Can't blame him , looks a lovely quiet country house. One, ironically, for the future this It'll get excavated one day I'd imagine Btw do you recall the Saxon hoard a few years back? In Staffordshire? There's talk now of making a giant Saxon warrior statue.. Larger than the statue of liberty!! |

The Royals never expressed an interest in archaeology before, I doubt they'd pitch in.
You can re-grown grass after a dig, so that shouldn't be a problem. But something like this should probably be done by specialists so I can understand preferring to wait. It's not going anywhere in the meantime. The Staffordshire hoard? Oh yes, mindblowing thing. I'm always a bit jealous about that, we get only small silver hoards around here, never gold and never quite as exquisite as that. (I am a big fan of saxon cloisonné jewelry. Sooo pretty.) But hey, we do have more Roman villas! (maybe not all with pretty mosaics but who's counting?) |
