December 17, 2003 - 100 Years of Flight!

Only realized a few days ago that the release date of "Return of the King" is ALSO:

The 100th Anniversary of the first flight, by the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina!!!

WOW...

Since it's the day before, I thought I'd move this back up the line... *a little afraid nobody will open this thread because they think it's just about the movie - shoulda named it more carefully*

Amazing that it only has been 100yrs. Considering how commonplace it seems to me today.

Before the Airplane it took about 7-14 days minimum to cross the Atlantic. (Depending on type of ship)

Today a flight from JFK (NYC) to LHR (London Heathrow) now takes about 5-7 hours. (excluding the Concord)

Consider the impact of flight on

War: WWI, WWII, 1948 Berlin Airlift and all later conflicts.
Commerce: Food & goods can be flown around the world within 2-3 days.
Tourism:
Mail:

Valandil,

Nice bit of trivia.

Sorry, we bet them by about 8 months.

edit: I should add that this wasn't recorded in the records, which is why it never comes up. It has only been mentioned in letters, and by eye-witness accounts - would have loved to have seen him crash into the gorse hedge! lol.

Interesting sites. (Especially the part about the lack of resources he had at his disposal.)

I think the release date was planned very carefully. The ROTK is meant to be The Greatest Film of All Time, and flight is meant to be the Greatest Invention of the 20th Century.
